This presents briefly the history of animal welfare, acts and rules govern prevention of cruelty to animals in India, about AWBI etc. Next presentation will describe about various form of cruelty caused to animals. This is a small effort to aware citizens on prevention of cruellty and to be compassionate for them.

4. History of animal welfare
Worshiping of cows seen from Indus valley civilisation
Samrat Ashok provided water troughs and shady trees
for the purpose of animals.He laid rules to prohibit
hunting of wild animals.
In 1882 British MP Richard martin shepharded a bill
through parliament offering protection from cruelty to
animals
In 1824 the 1st SPCA in the world established in Britain.
In 1840 Queen Victoria gave recognition to SPCA.
In 1960 India enforced Prevention of cruelty to animals act.

Under PCA act 1960 Animal welfare Board of India was
established in 1962.
In 1972 Wild life protection act in India established.
In 1979 UK established Farm animal welfare council in
which 5 freedoms were made mandatory for farm
animals as their rights.(freedom from thirst &
hunger,freedom from discomfort,freedom from pain
injury & disease,freedom to express normal
behavior,freedom from fear & distress
6. Animal welfare board of India
Animal welfare board of India is set up in India in 1962 in
accordance with sec.4 of PCA act 1960
It is functioning under the ministry of environment and
forest.
Its head quarter is at Chenai.
The board consists of 28 members appointed by Govt.of
India.
AWBI receives funds as per the budget provisions made in
each 5 year plan
AWBI gives recognition to all the animal welfare
organisation of our country.
7. Schemes implemented by AWBI
1.Provision of Ambulance service to animals in distress
.To ensure immediate attention to sick, injured and
distressed animals.
.Support to poor people who have large animals that faced
accidents/affected with disease.
.To act as mobile clinic to hold camps.
.To implement anti rabies prog. by collecting dogs and
releaseing them after sterilisation and immunization.
to transport animals to vety. Hospitals when owners are
unable.
NGOs assisted up to 90 % of project cost.Max. grant in aid 3.5
lakh for vehicle and 1 lakh for equipments

2.Animal birth control and immunisation
.Control stray dog population by sterilisation.
.Then immunisation with anti rabic vaccination

3. Protection during calamity and unforseen
circumstances
.Made provision of fodder, shelter, medical attention
during flood, cyclone, drought & earth quake.
4.Shelter house for animals.
Animal welfare organisations are assisted to the extent
of 90 % of project cost for construction of shelter
house up to ceiling of 25 lakhs including 10 % cost
contributed by them.

prepered densified rubber mat which prevents
knee,hock injuries,more milk yield,prevent mastitis
and laminitis.

12. Innovative ideas for animal welfare
Introduction of Animal welfare as a subject for children to
teach basing things in curriculum.
Starting Goshalas in jails.
Dogs under gone docking shall be disqualified in
participating dog shows.
Govt to lay down pet shop rules.
Awards to renown animal welfare activists and snake
resquers.
