3. 3. Memorable News

Nick Nardone, like other families, faced the worst news any family can ever hear:his daughter died from heroin overdose. However, what’s worse is that it is because of the Suffolk policy! The Suffolk policy bargains cash to high school students in return for information about drug dealers. They pay $500 if they find the drug dealer and arrests them. Some parents are okay with this policy, but others are arguing that this will put their child in harm’s way, and believes that the police should deal with this.

This article was chosen for memorable because not only people should remember kids dieing from drugs, but because the Suffolk policy bargains about drug dealers for cash. This may make students want to try out drugs.

Tension over Tipline
 4. 4. Controversial News

Eight Grader Savana Redding was striped search in the middle of school for drug abuse. Also, in that morning, another student with ibuprofen, a pain killer, was caught and told the assistant principle that she gotten it from Savana. Supreme Court are now considering okay to search for any drugs, however, Savana claims its violating her and other girls’ rights.

This article is controversial because it shows two points of views about rights with strong arguments.

V.S. Strip searches at school: Discipline gone too far?
 5. 5. Outrageous/Amazing News

New Yorkers chose Elliot Spitzer instead of David A. Paterson in charge for governor. 51% voted for Spitzer, 38% for Paterson, and 11% weren’t sure. Among Democrats, they say “resurrect Spitzer,” said pollster Lee Miringoff. He also added that Paterson received low marks for bad leadership and tackling the economic crisis. If Democratic gubernatorial primary were held today, Paterson would lose to Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, 21 percent to 70 percent, and in a general election, he would be defeated by Republican Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York City, 32 percent to 56 percent

I think this is outrageous because I think Spitzer shouldn’t be governor again. He already committed bad deeds, he might do it again if he becomes governor whereas, Paterson wouldn’t.

V.S. Poll: More than half prefer Spitzer to Paterson
 6. 6. Terrifying/Shocking News

Originating from Mexico, the Swine Flu has killed 103 people and sickened 1614 since April 13, although no has been reported yet in the U.S., several people have been infected. What’s worse, is that there’s no vaccine for it.

I chose this article because many people are sickened because of this flu, and will die because there’s is no vaccine for it. However, there are also students in schools that have it, including our school

Experts working to stem spread
 7. 7. Tragic News

William Parante, an attorney and investment manager, made illegal investment that may be linked with his family. William, not taking any chances, murdered his family of 2 daughters, Stephanie,19 Catherine, 11, and his wife, Betty, 58. After beating and suffocating them, he cut himself and bleed to death.

This article was chosen because it is heartbreaking, especially Stephanie’s friends, who was very worried and suspicious about the Parantes because they don’t call in the night in 11:50 p.m.

College roommate: Parente’s dad sounded off on the phone
 8. 8. Strange News

A new creature has been added to our family tree: hobbits. They existed 17,000 thousand years ago. The foot measures about 7 inches in length and lends belief to the argument that hobbits were a healthy and thriving group that existed as recently as 17,000 years ago, said William Jungers, a paleoanthropologist. They walk upright on two feet, making them more human than apelike. However, doubters don’t believe than they originated from Africa and traveled thousands of miles to Indonesia.

I chose this article because I used to thought millions of years ago, we were Native Americans, Cavemen, etc. On the other hand, after reading this news I found out that there maybe more to our ancestors than we think. Hobbits walk upright and were humanlike. This means we have more to learn about our past.

Researchers uncover evidence of Hobbit-like creature
