Google Trends visually shows the volume of searchs from around the world. It’s a window into the internet’s hive mind. This graph shows the number of related news articles. So everyone’s talking about twitter but the world doesn't give a shit. Oh and myspace is almost dead.
Trends is a great tool to gauge how popular something is, it’s perfect for media owners. But you need to give results context. Look at master chef just in Australia and you can also see the increase it’s had just on recipe searches.
You can also use it to find global trends. Here we see music piracy is down, as either people know where to get it for free or just accept that paying for music is OK. Although it seems South Africans still don’t want to pay for their tunes.
In retrospect you can track the life of a fad. Here we see 2 girls 1 cup vs. Chat Roulette. You can see there is a small window of opportunity to latch on to a fad.I wonder why I never saw 2 girls 1 cup on CNN?
You can also track when our industry takes it’s holiday. Oh right around the end of December when all the social media gurus stop searching for themselves. Who here can say they are old school and was searching for social media back in 2004?
But the real fun for me, starts when you go outside the usual topics and start exploring. Right now it’s neck and neck between Gaga and Bieber but my money is on God for the long term investment. I’d sell that Paris hilton sex tape you made while you still can
But if you really want to test how popular something is you need to be bigger than jesus. And in early 2006, thanks to some made up facts, Sir Chuck Norris was just that. What do we learn from this? You can’t go wrong with a beard
If I ran a Movie studio I would use this tool when looking to greenlight a film. Pirates are always big while you can’t go wrong with vampires these days. So expect to see less zombie films and more vampire pirates.
You don’t have to look at trends to see that unemployment is a huge topic in the US.I did find interesting that while the number of sad people slowly risesIt’s only in the last few months that people are becoming more angry, so get ready for the angriest christmas ever!
While the world does get more sad it’s sobering to see suicide dropping. I had hoped this reflected actual suicide rates going down but sadly my further research didnt show this.
This chart shows that World Aids Day on Dec 1 really does raise awareness of AIDS. It also shows people are getting sick of it. But the real worry for everyone is cancer, even though searches have been down every year
If only the real stock market was this easy. OMG shares went through the roof in 2010, while the LOL remained steady. WTF needs to up it’s dividend to bring in new investors. And look out for the FTW IPO goes on sale later this year
Let it be known that 2010 is year of the unicorn, with the staying power not seen my any other mythical creature in the past.So we all know the internet used to be dominated by porn but now it’s more about connecting to friends and meeting people right?
Whoops got that wrong, it looks like true love on the internet might not be the answer. Interesting to see that Nigeria is big on dating. So please steer clear of Nigeria dating sites asking for your credit card. But porn takes many shapes and forms on the internet. What exactly are people looking at?
Oh.... Kay..., I’m cancelling my grandma’s busabout tour of europe right after this. Also was it just me who missed the robot sex revolution earlier this year?
But it’s not just porn. People also like to laugh. And while Funny cats fought a good battle, funny porn looks to be breaking ahead. Especially in Brisbane!? Unless someone beats me to it I’m registering “I can Haz Dildoz.com” right after this.
After hrs of searching this was one of the strongest correlations I could find.It seem December is the month for shopping while January is the month for diet. If only people learnt to exercise we’d all be OKOh and I also learned that Brazillians are crazy about shopping!
All I can say about this trend is the next time Grandma knits you a sweater you better damn well wear it! If not for your own safety think of grandpa.
There was a brief period near the end of 2008 where collective world didn’t know it’s ass from it’s elbow. Blame daylight savings! And in 2010 more than twice as many people asked google “what time is it”, compared to 6 years ago. So what did I learn from spending hrs on Google Trends?
1: it’s addictive and 2: I now have the perfect pitch for a Hollywood blockbuster.
