  32. 32. Pronouns and Antecedents A pronoun takes the place of a noun or nouns.  An antecedent, or referent, is the noun or nouns to which the pronoun refers. A pronoun and its antecedent must agree in number and gender.
  33. 33. Pronouns and Antecedents  Before you use a pronoun, ask yourself whether the antecedent is singular or plural. If the antecedent is singular, decide whether it is masculine, feminine, or neuter. Then choose a pronoun that agrees.

  80. 80. Character and Setting  Characters are the people in a story. You can learn about characters by noticing what they say and do and by noticing how they interact with other characters.  The setting is the time and place of a story.
  81. 81. Rhyme  Rhyme is two or more words that have the same ending sound. The words yet and get are an example from “A Man for All Seasonings” on page 464.  Rhyming words do not necessarily end with the same letters. The words loan and bone rhyme, even though the endings are spelled differently.
  82. 82. Rhyme  Two-syllable words can rhyme just in the last syllable (obey, today) or in the first syllable with the same last syllable (topping, shopping).  Find other rhyming words in “A Man for All Seasonings.”
