  51. 51. To compare and contrast is to tell how two or more things are alike and different. Clue words such as like and as show similarities. Clue words such as but, instead, and unlike show differences.
  52. 52. Writers sometimes use persuasive devices in an attempt to convince or persuade the reader to agree with their point of view. Writers may try to influence readers by using strong words, making vague statements, or including expert statements.
  53. 53. Look for persuasive devices in writing to help you determine whether or not to believe a writer’s claims.
  54. 54. If you come upon a familiar word that does not seem to make sense in a sentence, it may be a multiple-meaning word. Reread the sentence and look for clues around it to other possible meanings.
