  3. 3. Social Networks are an important part of motherhood and formany mothers, it is the new neighborhood. Many moms findit much easier to connect with new friends that have similarcyber interests as well as their own real-life girlfriends on socialplatforms. What started out as a trendy something-to-do hasquickly become a must-do for all women to stay sane when lifeis quite the opposite. We turn to social media for easy dinnerrecipes or to blow off steam when things go wrong to anaudience that is relatively safe.
  4. 4. Moms are too busy to connect over the fence so many of us havepulled out our laptops, tablets and phones to visit with friends. Idont believe that social networking can replace the face-to-facegirl time but I will admit that since Facebook, Twitter andLinkedIn, Ive connected and communicated with tons of peoplefrom high school, college and old neighbors and friends who Imtruly glad to have become reacquainted with.
  5. 5. Megan Calhoun, the founder of one of my favorite socialnetworks called said:"Women, especially mothers, seem to be naturally giftedcommunity builders. The growth of social networking serviceslike Facebook and Twitter has helped them expand beyondphysical communities and family. Women can now extend theirnetworks to connect with people they admire, trust, share aconnection with or who simply make them laugh.
  6. 6. While Id argue nearly all women crave community and support --particularly around the challenges of motherhood -- not all womenare equally driven to build extensive communities. There is a needto build community, but the trend youre likely referring to is simplythat some moms are driven to maintain highly visible, extensivecommunities and the world of social networking sites and blogsallow them to maintain a high number of relationships in anefficient manner."
  7. 7. Tracy Odell, Executive Vice President of believes:"One reason that social networking is important to todaysmoms is because the real-life support systems that previousgenerations of moms had have eroded. In the past, motherslived with family and extended family and had lots of helpraising their children. Today, many moms live in more isolatedhouseholds so being able to go online to get advice or just haveanother person to talk to is a both a huge help and a sanitysaver. We all need a shoulder to lean on and onlinecommunities offer that shoulder any time you need it."
