The U.S. Department of Education Commission on Reading took into account over 10,000 studies and found that the most important activity for building the skills and background for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children (see Anderson, Hiebert, Scott, & Wilkinson, 1985). Children who are read to are usually the very best readers in the classroom, and they acquire large vocabularies, write well, and do better in other subject areas, as well. Lori D.   26. 26. ©2018 Jillian Heise | @heisereads Questions I Asked to Prompt Thoughtfulness What did you think? Beyond I liked it or It was good. MODEL elaboration and PROMPT for text evidence. What was it about? This often led to summarizing, which is not what I wanted, so... What was it really about? What message might the author be sending? What lesson about life can you take from this book? Now, we get to theme which has no one “right” answer. Not every day. Not every time. Not every kid. But with a wide variety of books, and increased volume of thought & talk around books, students improve their ability to think critically about text. Think of it as a year-long scaffold. Deep reflection won’t happen on day 1 & maybe not on day 20, but by day 60...90...120...imagine what kids will be able to show you.
