  6. 6. RISE OF NAPOLEON3. Civil Code • Before the Revolution France had almost 300 laws • Napoleonic/Civil Code is one of seven created by Napoleon • Preserved many of the principles of the revolution: equality of all citizens before the law; the right of the individual to choose a profession religious toleration; and the abolition of serfdom and all feudal obligations • Women were “less equal than men” and treated like children, no public role
  7. 7. RISE OF NAPOLEON4. Turned Conquered into Allies • French Empire, Dependent States and Allied States • French Empire= enlarged France extending to the Rhine and western half of Italy • Dependent States= kingdoms ruled by relatives of Napoleon (Spain, Holland, kingdom of Italy, Swiss Republic, the Grand Duchy of Warsaw, and the Confederation of the Rhine) • Allied States= countries defeated and forced to join his struggle against Britain (Prussia, Austria, Russia and Sweden)
