  1. 1. Why did people build Stonehenge? What have people thought in the past about Stonehenge?
  2. 2. Where is Stonehenge? Stonehenge is near a town called Amesbury on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire in the south of England. The River Avon is very close by and flows south to the English Channel.
  3. 3. Why was Stonehenge built? People have wondered why Stonehenge was built for hundreds of years. The Anglo-Saxons thought it was a place to hang criminals as the stones looked like their own hanging places, or henges.
  4. 4. Why was Stonehenge built? Geoffrey of Monmouth, writing about 800 years ago, thought it was made by giants and brought to Salisbury Plain from Ireland by Merlin.
  5. 5. Why was Stonehenge built? William Stukeley, who worked at Stonehenge about 300 years ago, thought it had been built by the druids in the Iron Age and was a pre- Roman temple.
  6. 6. Why was Stonehenge built? 60 years ago the astronomer Gerald Hawkins suggested Stonehenge was an observatory to predict solar and lunar eclipses.
  7. 7. Why was Stonehenge built? One theory by a modern archaeologist called Mike Parker Pearson is that Stonehenge was built as a monument to the dead.
