Think of Voicethread as an online PowerPoint presentation that teachers and students can collaborate on. Voicethread lets you upload photos or videos to your presentation, which creates a URL for your project. The project link can be shared with students or the project can be embedded in a website or blog. What makes Voicethread stand out separating it from a Microsoft PowerPoint is the commenting feature. Students can comment on your presentation through audio or typing. This helps to build a collaborative community discussion around your topic. 1) Navigate your browser to http://voicethread.com/. 2) The top menu bar lets you browse Voicethreads people have created. The database is extensive with a lot of curriculum based threads. Browsing is a great way to get introduced to Voicethread or use Voicethread without creating your own account. When you are ready to create your own account click on Register. When you register for a free account you are able to create three Voicethreads. You can always delete threads so you don’t bump over your limit. A paid class or school account is about $1 per student. 3) Click on Create to start making your Voicethread. There are three steps to creating a Voicethread. We will first concentrate on Uploading. Browse will browse everyone’s threads and MyVoice will list your own threads. 4) Most of the time you are going to upload photos or videos from My Computer. You also have the option to use media from Media Sources like Flickr and the NY Public Library, a URL or a video or picture from your webcam.
5) I am going to upload a picture of a crowd to ask my student for strategies to estimate the number of people. You can upload more than one picture and upload videos. Click on Title and Description to add these. After you upload your media you want to add comments. You can comment by telephone (you need to pay for minutes), webcam, audio, or typing and using the drawing tool. 6) I am going to use the text and drawing comment features to ask my students for strategies to estimate the crowd in the photo.
7) The last step is to share your Voicethread. A link is created where your students can find your thread. You can copy and share your link through email or by putting it on a website. You can also grab the embed code to put the Voicethread in a website, blog or wiki. 8) The Publishing Options lets you moderate comments and control who can view your Voicethread. 9) The last step is to have your students leave comments on your thread. This will lead to a collaborative community discussion around your topic.
