2. 2. Half of America Could be 'Obese' by 2030: StudyAugust 26, 2011 5:17 PM EDT America is getting fatter: Half of all men and women in the United Statescould be obese in 20 years, according to a study by the Journal Lancet and reported by the Los Angeles Times. This could lead to 65 million more Americans being Between 2007 and 2008, 32 percent of men were obese in the United States, while 35 percent of women hit the obesity benchmark. Using 20 years of Body Mass Index data, the researchers note that approximately 50 percent of men could reach obesity and between 45 and 52 percent of women could reach that point. An individual is defined when a person is at least 20 percent heavier than his or her ideal weight, according to WebMd. The figure is calculated by a person BMI, which takes into account height, weight, age and sex to determine a person's ideal weight. Figures could be thrown off by a person's muscle tone -- a muscular football player could be considered obese, for example. What could the rise in obesity mean? An increase in obesity could mean 8 million more cases of diabetes, 500,000-plus cases of cancer and 6.8 million cases of coronary heart disease in the U.S., the Times reports. The ever-expanding waistlines could lead to higher healthcare costs, the study notes. The researchers predict a $66 rise in annual costs to treat obesity related issues. Recently, emphasis has been placed on preventative measures to bring down obesity rates. For example, many employer-provided health insurance programs allow people to join gyms for a discounted rate, and will lower insurance rates for those who lose weight.
3. 3. Expanding Waistlines May Boost U.S. Health Cost $66 Billion a Year by 2030- Aug 25, 2011 6:42 PM ET Bloomberg Expanding Waistlines May Boost U.S. Health Cost $66 Billion U.S. health-care spending will rise by as much as $66 billion a year by 2030 because of increased obesity if historic trends continue, researchers said. Almost 100 million Americans and 15 million Britons are already considered obese, based on body-mass index, a ratio of weight to height, Y. Claire Wang, an epidemiologist at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health in New York, said yesterday at a London news conference. Another 65 million American adults and another 11 million British adults would join them in the next two decades based on past trends, said Wang, one of the authors of a four-part series on obesity published in today’s Lancet. The increased cost represents about 2.6 percent of the U.S.’s annual health-care bill. In the U.K., costs would rise as much as 2 billion pounds ($3.3 billion) a year, or 2 percent of yearly health spending. “We are in an obesity and chronic disease crisis although it doesn’t feel like it,” Boyd Swinburn, a professor at Deakin University in Melbourne and another of the authors, said at the press conference. “It’s a little bit like the frog sitting in hot water -- it doesn’t realize that it’s going to boil until it’s too late.”
4. 4. Tax us more, say wealthy EuropeansGerman group latest to volunteer for higher contributions, saying country could raise €100bn in two years with a 5% wealth taxMonday 29 August 2011 20.37 BST First it was Warren Buffett announcing that he and his chums had been "coddled long enough by a billionaire-friendly Congress".Then Liliane Bettencourt, France's richest woman, who was at the centre of a tax scandal last year, signed a letter along with 15 other billionaires begging to make a special contribution to the treasury to help drag France out of the financial crisis.Even an Italian got in the action, with the boss of Ferrari saying that as he was rich, it was only "right" that he stump up more cash. Now, as both France and Spain consider introducing a wealth tax, a group of 50 rich Germans have joined the "tax me harder" movement by renewing their open call to Angela Merkel to "stop the gap between rich and poor getting even bigger".
5. 5. The World’s Only Female 10th Degree Black Belt (She’s 98)08/29/2011 –I love celebrating the life victories of strong and successful women. I especially like to do this when they break a belief barrier. When that happens, our perspective changes, and we start to truly believe that anything is possible. Take beauty and age for example. There has long been a myth that only young women are beautiful, andthat aging is something to fight. In reality, aging is part of a beautiful life, and eachsmile line that might show up on our face over time is simply evidence of a life well lived.I remember writing about this 100-year-old woman who won a beauty contest. She now travels to nursing homes around the country to inspire others. Then of course there was this absolutely stunning 82-year-old supermodel who is still very much in demand. Today I’d like to share with you the story of Keiko Fukuda. I’ve seen her all over the Internet this month, and she definitely deserves her own place here on Bit Rebels.Keiko recently became the first woman ever in history to become a 10th degree black belt in Judo. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, she is 98-years-old. This is the highest ranking in Judo, and only three other people have ever achieved this level. They were all men living in Japan. Keiko is also the last living student of Jigoro Kano who founded Judo in 1882. She still teaches classes to women and girls three times a week, and she often talks about the huge sacrifices she’s made throughout her lifetime as she worked towards this goal. You can read more about her incredible story on Bloody Elbow.
6. 6. Rare find discovered amid town's Old West kitsch Associated Press | Posted: Monday, August 29, 2011 The Gypsy sat for decades in a restaurant amid the Old West kitsch that fills this formergold rush town, her unblinking gaze greeting the tourists who shuffled in from the creaking wooden sidewalk outside. Some mistook her for Zoltar, the fortune-telling machine featured in the Tom Hanks movie "Big." Others took one look at those piercing eyes and got the heebie-jeebies so bad they couldn't get away fast enough. But until a few years ago, nobody, not even her owner, knew the nonfunctioning machinegathering dust in Bob's Place was an undiscovered treasure sitting in plain sight in this ghost town-turned-themed tourist attraction. The 100-year-old fortune teller was an extremely rare find. Instead of dispensing a card like Zoltar, the Gypsy would actually speak your fortune from a hidden record player. When you dropped a nickel in the slot, her eyes would flash, her teeth would chatter and her voice would come floating from a tube extending out of the eight-foot-tall box.Word got out when the Montana Heritage Commission began restoring the Gypsy more than five years ago, and collectors realized the machine was one of two or three "verbal" fortune tellers left in the world. One of those collectors, magician David Copperfield, said he thinks she is even rarer than that."I think it's only one of one," Copperfield said in a recent telephone interview with The Associated Press.Copperfield wanted the Gypsy to be the crown jewel in his collection of turn-of the century penny arcade games. It would occupy a place of pride among the magician's mechanized Yacht Race, Temple of Mystery and various machines that tested a person's strength.Copperfield acknowledged approaching the curators about buying the Gypsy a few years ago but declined to say what he offered. Janna Norby, the Montana Heritage Commission curator who received the call from Copperfield's assistant, said it was in the ballpark of $2 million, along with a proposal to replace it with another fortune-telling machine. On top of that, he pledged to promote Virginia City in advertisements. But Heritage commission curators, representing the Gypsy's owner _ the state of Montana _ rejected the idea, saying cashing in on this piece of history would be akin to selling their soul."If we start selling our collection for money, what do we have?" said Norby, the commission's former curator of collections. The commission's acting director, Marilyn Ross echoed Norby's sentiments: "That is not something we would ever consider, selling off these antiques."That dismissal has set collectors grumbling. Theo Holstein, a California collector and renovator of such machines, said he thinks the Gypsy is wasted in Virginia City and should be placed in a private collection for proper care. He said he is trying to gather investors to make a $3 million bid that would top Copperfield's offer.
Before It Burned Down, Richard Branson's Necker Island Was A Boozy Paradise For CelebritiesAug. 26, 2011, 12:27 PM Richard Branson's sprawling home on his private island in the Caribbean tragically burned to the ground this week after it was struck by lightning caused by Hurricane Irene.Fortunately no one was injured, thanks in part to heroic reaction of actress Kate Winslet, who was vacationing on the island and carried Branson's 90-year-old mother to safety.Click here to tour Necker Island >Branson vowed to rebuild, and said that his dagger Holly would get married on Necker Island's beach this winter as planned. But given the extent of the damage to the Great House, constructed almost entirely of wood, Branson has a tall task ahead of him.So what was Necker Island like prior to the fire?By all accounts, it was a tropical getaway frequented by celebrities and fueled by booze, and colored by the antics of Branson himself.According to the Daily Mail:
EmergenceEarth & SpaceEmerging TechFuturismMach 20 Aircraft “Lost” 9 Minutes After LaunchAugust 11, 2011, 11:08 PM Right now, the US Military is working on a project with an interesting goal — to develop an aircraft that can reach any part of the globe in one hour. The HTV-2 was designed with that goal in mind. It can maneuver through the atmosphere at 13,000 mph, and is made to be launched at the “edge of space”.The aircraft was launched from the Vandenberg Air Force Base, and was the second of two planned flights. However, 9 minutes after launch, communication with the experimental craft was lost. Researchers assumed that the craft had impacted the Pacific Ocean (intentionally) along the planned flight path.
9. 9. 45 of 86 airmen since March fail Spice testsAugust 29, 2011Star & StripesMore than half of the airmen tested for the designer drug Spice have had positive results, the Air Force Times reported.Since March, 45 of the 86 airmen that were tested for the syntehetic form of cannabis had postive results. In June of last year, the Air Force issued a sweeping ban on possession and use of Spice and all mood-altering substances, with the exception of alcohol and tobacco. The Armed Forces Medical Examiner System is the joint agency responsible for conducting Spice urinalyses for each of the services. Findings show that airmen aren’t alone in abusing Spice. Soldiers, sailors and Marines have also tested positive at high rates, with 164 of 242 soldiers showing evidence of Spice use and 113 of 183 Marines and sailors testing positive for the drug.Col. Timothy Lyons, a top forensic toxicology expert at AFMES, said the numbers aren’t indicative of rates among troops, because the samples emerged from a population that was already under investigation.Read more about Spice use among airmen in the Air Force Times.
13. 13. Gaddafi's girl executioner: Nisreen, 19, admits shooting 11 rebel prisoners, now she is shackled to hospital bed awaiting justice29th August 2011 First you see her large brown eyes and rosebud lips, framed by a pink headscarf. Then you notice that her bruised feet are secured by manacles to the foot of her bed.NisreenMansour al Forgani is a pretty 19-year-old. She was also a serial killer for Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.Yesterday, in a heavily guarded room at the Matiga military hospital in Tripoli, she admitted to the Mail that she had executed as many as 11 suspected rebel prisoners in the days leading up to the fall of the Libyan capital last week. Shot at point-blank range, in cold blood. ‘I killed the first one, then they would bring another one up to the room,’ Nisreen said. ‘He would see the body on the floor and look shocked. Then I would shoot him too. I did it from about a metre away.’One of thousands of girls and young women recruited by Gaddafi’s all-female militias, Nisreen is now a prisoner of the rebels and in fear of her life. Yet despite her killings, it is impossible not to feel pity for her. Nisreen claims – and her doctors and even some of the rebel fighters believe her – that she had to shoot under great duress. She also says that she was sexually abused by senior military figures, one of whom was the commander of the elite Tripoli brigade tasked with protecting Gaddafi himself. ‘I told them [the rebels] what I did,’ she said. ‘They are angry. I do not know what will happen to me now.’
Province relents on making mom prove birth Gazette Justice August 26, 2011 Sunshine Rose Mattingsly is 5 months old, and her mom, Heather, had a tough timegetting a birth certificate because no licensed midwife or doctor supervised the birth. Bureaucrats insisted on more proof Heather had the baby.MONTREAL - After numerous frustrating phone calls with bureaucrats, Sunshine Rose will exist in the eyes of the Quebec government and her mother will not have to show her vagina to anyone to prove the 5-month-old infant is hers.Heather Mattingsly, who gave birth in March, has spent her time since trying to convince the Directeur de l’état civil that even though she engaged the help of an unlicensed midwife to give birth at home, the baby is indeed hers.Days after the birth and as required, she provided the government agency in charge of issuing birth certificates with an ultrasound, a doctor’s letter and an attestation of birth, but none of that was good enough. This week, the agency said she’d have to get a vaginal examination – a procedure that doctors and midwives alike agreed would prove absolutely nothing.“They’re saying ‘we’re not doubting the pregnancy, we’re doubting that you birthed a live child’,” said Mattingsly, who is collecting maternity benefits and breastfeeding. “How is a vaginal exam going to prove that?”But late Friday, after many calls from the media, the agency’s director called Mattingsly and said after reviewing her file personally, he decided she didn’t need to go for the examination. But, he said, she still had to provide an ultrasound, but unlike the first one she submitted, this one had to be signed by a doctor.Marie Godbout, a spokesperson for the agency, said she couldn’t discuss Mattingsly’s case, but said anyone who gives birth without a doctor or licensed midwife present has to prove the biological link between mother and child.
