  2. 2. <ul><li>Samurai have used the sword for many centuries to defeat opponents, or themselves </li></ul><ul><li>Japanese fighting swords were restricted to the use of samurai only from the Kamakura period onward </li></ul><ul><li>Swords are considered sacred to Hachiman, the Japanese war god </li></ul><ul><li>Sword makers were highly honored, since they concealed the secret of how to make a blade </li></ul><ul><li>Some of their swords are believed to be the homes of Kami. </li></ul><ul><li>To make a sword, a sword maker must have a thick strip of soft iron with low carbon content, and place it inside a strip of hard iron with high carbon content. </li></ul><ul><li>He would then fold the hard iron over the soft iron. He would then cool the sword </li></ul><ul><li>The two kinds of iron would cool at different rates, causing the sword to curve. The two kinds of iron also caused the sword to be flexible and hold its edge </li></ul><ul><li>. The sword was then sharpened and carved with beautiful inscriptions.then, a handle was made and attached to the sword. </li></ul><ul><li>A Nodachi is an extra long sword with a long handle. </li></ul><ul><li>Seppuku swords are smaller than normal samurai swords. They are used to commit seppuku, a ritual suicide, where a dishonored man or woman stabs and slices themselves to regain their honor </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>A samurai’s armor showed his status while giving him unbelievable protection. </li></ul><ul><li>It would also be very elegant </li></ul><ul><li>Was flexible enough to be used in unarmed combat </li></ul><ul><li>One suit of armor would usually take all of an armor maker’s time for about one whole year. </li></ul><ul><li>To make a suit of armor the armor maker needed to punch holes in hundreds of small rectangles of rawhide and then tie them together to form plates </li></ul><ul><li>After forming these plates they needed to be tied together with silk thread in the shape of the suit. </li></ul><ul><li>Now the helmet the helmet which is the most decorative part. </li></ul><ul><li>First he would mold a piece of metal into the shape of the samurai’s face, only contorted with rage. </li></ul><ul><li>The outside of the face mask would have lots of decorative detail to make the samurai seem fiercer. Lots of masks had mustaches. </li></ul><ul><li>The face mask was attached to the top of the helmet which had an enormous headdress showing the family Mon or crest. </li></ul><ul><li>The headdress usually included things like conch shells, Viking style horns and items that could be found in nature. </li></ul><ul><li>Often on the back of the suit there was a Sashimono that showed a samurai’s master's mon . </li></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>Yumi, a Samurai's bow, was made of deciduous wood with a face of bamboo </li></ul><ul><li>. Arrows were also made of bamboo. </li></ul><ul><li>this was because bamboo naturally grows straight and was fairly common. </li></ul><ul><li>Each was fitted with three feathers. </li></ul><ul><li>Sometimes the longbow needed more than one person to string it since it was so long and equally powerful. </li></ul>
