09 P1.Swords Armor And Bows

 1. 1. Swords, Armor, and Bows By: Nick Verderame Anne Graham Sydney Johnson
 2. 2. What was the relationship between the Samurai and his or her sword?

The relationship between the Samurai and his sword was so close that the Samurai named their sword

The Samurai believed that the outcome of whatever battle they were fighting in depended upon the sword not how the Samurai fought

Also the Samurai's blade would stay with that Samurai for his entire life until death, in the hand of the Samurai in battle or with the Samurai when he committed seppuku

The sword was the life of that Samurai and the Samurai used it like his soul.

 3. 3. How Were Samurai Swords Made?

The sword-smith creating the sword made the blade both sharp and resilient, by combining different metals

The hardness of steel depended on carbon content.

There are over 12 folds in the metal, and there are two different kinds of metals combined to make soft flexible core in the sword

The blade is also curved because it is hardened by dipping it in cool water.

The blade usually shows the sword-smith’s personality in the sword.

 4. 4. How Do Samurai Make and Use Bows?

The way that the Japanese make bows is by binding wood reinforced by bamboo.

The nock or slit for the feathers was cut just above the arrow and then three feathers were fitted on the back.

Bowstrings were often made of plant fibre and usually hemp or a material used for making rope coated with wax to give a hard, smooth texture.

The Japanese bows on horseback were so large that when they used them they had to start the bow facing the ground.

Then when they pulled back on the bow they pulled the bow up. When the bow reached the angle that they wanted it to they would let it go.

 5. 5. What were important features of the Samurai's Armor?

Some important features of a Samurai's armor is the do The do is the body armor of the Samurai's suit of armor

Other parts of a Samurai's armor were the Kusazuri, which were tassets that hung from the do.

There was also the Nodowa or throat protector, the mempo that was the face mask, the kabuto or helmet, there was also the shikoro which is also known as the neck guard.

Kotes, which are like the English word coat, were the arm protectors that protected the Samurai's arms from being harmed in any attack.

Because of the many smaller pieces of metal that were used instead of one big piece of metal gave the armor a more bendable feature which was very helpful in unarmed combat.

 6. 6. How and What was Japanese Armor Made and Made of?

Japanese armor was made with silk, iron, leather, and bamboo. It took over a year for people to make a suit of armor.

Each rawhide or cattle skin plate was overlapped to make flexible panels. These cattle skin plates or pads are then sewn into the suit.

The suits are made for protection but also are meant to show power and strength.

The suit itself was made of lacquered iron plates held together with a thick silk cord or a thick leather cord.

Since bowman had to pull the bow back with their right arm the armor plate they used on the right side only covered their hip.

This was so they could pull the bow back with their right hand.

 7. 7. What is a Samurai Challenge? What Happens in a Samurai Challenge? How Would a Samurai Challenge be Started?

A samurai challenge is when one Samurai challenges another, and they fight until one wins; but the person who lost, would have to commit Seppuku if they were a Samurai.

If the Samurai loses, and does not perform Seppuku, then they lose their honor.

Also, in a situation that a Samurai would have to choose over life and death, they would choose death.

The Samurai would not preoccupy themselves with the thought of dying without realizing one’s ambitions is an ignoble death.

One type of challenging someone to a duel is when a Samurai lays a sword down on the ground and kick it toward anyone’s direction.
