  2. 2. Growth of the Internet<br />The internet is a revolution! It has made distances shorter and the world smaller. <br />The Internet by definition is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) to serve billions of users worldwide<br />There are close to 2 Billion internet users today around the world!<br />The growth of internet usage since 2000- 2009 is 380.3 %!<br />The Internet can powerfully leverage your ability to find, manage, and share information. Never before in human history has such a valuable resource been available to so many people at such little cost. You are incredibly lucky!<br />

  4. 4. Websites Everywhere!<br />A website is simply an online presence. Websites are hosted at ‘domains’ (there own small space on the internet). In January 2008 the total number of websites on earth was 182 million – this includes blogs that are pasted on subdomains such as blogspot, twitter, typepad etc.<br />Growth of the web almost doubled from 2006-2008<br />Shrinking in the total number of <br />Websites being published has yet to <br />occur! We are also visiting more <br />websites than ever and spending <br />longer there!<br />

E-Commerce<br />E-commerce is the exchange of goods, <br />information products, or services via an <br />electronic medium such as the <br />Internet – Wikipedia<br />Growth in UK business-to-consumer <br />(B2C) e-commerce sales (including travel) <br />slowed in 2008, as the recession became a reality for many consumers. The financial squeeze will continue to influence online buying activity through 2010.<br />eMarketer estimates that 72.5% of UK Internet users will buy at least one item online in 2009. Between 2009 and 2013, the number of online buyers will rise from 26.9 million to 31.8 million—over one-half of the UK population<br />

Examples of online advertising include contextual ads on search engine results pages, banner ads, Rich Media<br />According to new data from the US Government, the internet advertising sector grew by some 40% during the year, resulting in its identification as the fast growing medium. <br />Internet Advertising increased it’s market share to 12 % in 2009 from 3.9% in 2006.<br />A report published by the Advertising Association <br />suggested that the market had the potential <br />to grow by almost 40% in the next 12 years. <br />

The rise in popularity of Social Networking<br />Online social networking basically <br />involves communicating and <br />sharing information (often personal) <br />with friends, family, work and other <br />organisations. It can include video and pictures and many other applications that make the user feel a part of a larger social community.<br />Youtube has 100million worldwide monthly users. Facebook has over 200 million registered users and Twitter has around 7 million monthly users.<br />
