What does it do? <ul><li>An Operating System is the software which controls the operation of your computer </li></ul><ul><li>A computer cannot function without it </li></ul><ul><li>Manages the loading and running of programs </li></ul><ul><li>Controls the use of peripherals (printers etc) </li></ul><ul><li>Manages of the use of the memory and storage </li></ul><ul><li>Maintains security </li></ul>

CLI <ul><li>Command Line Interface </li></ul><ul><li>Early Operating Systems did not have a WIMP interface, (Windows, Icons, Mouse, Pull Down Menu) </li></ul><ul><li>The only way to interact with the computer was to type commands </li></ul><ul><li>Microsoft’s first OS was known a MS DOS </li></ul><ul><ul><li>(Disk Operating System) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>This was originally produced for IBM and was known as IBM PC DOS </li></ul></ul>

GUI <ul><li>In 1973 the first computer with a Graphical User Interface was developed by Xerox, however it was never mass-marketed </li></ul><ul><li>Apple visited the Xerox labs in 1979 to view their revolutionary new GUI interface. Xerox allowed Apple to use some of the ideas in exchange for shares </li></ul><ul><li>In 1983 Apple released the Apple LISA, which included a revolutionary GUI interface. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Macintosh <ul><li>The LISA machine wasn’t particularly successful due to the cost </li></ul><ul><li>In 1984 Apple introduced the first Macintosh. </li></ul><ul><li>It became the first commercially successful computer to feature a GUI rather than a CLI </li></ul>

Windows 1 <ul><li>The first version of Windows was released in 1985, however it was not very successful, most people stuck with DOS </li></ul><ul><li>It was not a complete OS, it was really an extension of DOS </li></ul><ul><li>The first successful version of Windows was 3.0 which was released in 1991 </li></ul>
