Application Types <ul><li>There are lots of different types of application, each one is good at doing something different. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Word Processors </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Drawing Software </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Photo Editing Software </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Desktop Publishing Software </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Presentation Software </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Spreadsheets </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Databases </li></ul></ul>
  3. 3. Word Processors <ul><li>Used for editing text, for example writing: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Letters </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Essays </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Reports </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Microsoft Word is the most common example </li></ul>

Drawing Software <ul><li>Usually used to create original, vector based graphics </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Vector = Line based images, stored as a series of coordinates, the file size is usually smaller than bitmap </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Bitmap = Usually photos, stored as dots called pixels, the file size is usually bigger than vector </li></ul></ul>
  5. 5. Photo-Editing Software <ul><li>Usually used to edit bitmaps, for example photographs </li></ul>
  6. 6. Desktop Publishing Software <ul><li>Good for designing publications that include a mixture of images and text, and may also require a complex layout </li></ul><ul><li>For example: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Leaflets </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Magazines </li></ul></ul>
  7. 7. Presentation Software <ul><li>For making presentations, usually designed to be projected onto a large screen and seen by many people. </li></ul><ul><li>They can include: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Text </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Images </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Animations </li></ul></ul>
  8. 8. Spreadsheets <ul><li>Usually used to process and analyse numeric information </li></ul><ul><li>They can be used to produce statistics and create charts </li></ul><ul><li>They can also be used as models to create predictions </li></ul><ul><li>Good for dealing with finances (money) </li></ul>
  9. 9. Databases <ul><li>Allows you to store large amounts of data in an organised way </li></ul><ul><li>Stored in fields and records </li></ul><ul><li>The data can be searched easily and is usually much more time efficient than paper-based systems </li></ul>
