  2. 2. Online Classroom Impact: Tapping Twitter, Facebook, and Other Tools <ul><li>Social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube are exploding in popularity and our students are using them. Do you want to join in? The presenters discuss tips and tactics needed to interact using these tools. This session features a big-picture perspective, as well as the individual steps necessary to get started. </li></ul>

  4. 6. Getting Started <ul><li>Use a handle similar to your real name. </li></ul><ul><li>Upload a picture. </li></ul><ul><li>Include your real name, location, bio, webpage, etc. </li></ul>
  5. 7. Once you’re setup Post your updates here (140 character limit). Your friends updates. Your latest post.
  6. 8. Following/Follower numbers. Recent posts mentioning you. Direct messages to you. Posts you’ve marked as favorites. Twitter Search. Trending Topics. People you follow.

  9. 11. follow <ul><li>Clicking “Follow” makes you a follower! </li></ul>
  10. 12. @reply <ul><li>A tweet that is directed to a single person you follow that all of your followers can see. </li></ul>
  11. 13. Direct Message (DM) <ul><li>A direct message sent within twitter in private to another person you follow. Other followers cannot Sort of like texting. </li></ul>* Don’t send Direct Messages to people that you aren't following because they can't respond back to you.
  12. 14. RT or “retweet” <ul><li>Use RT to share what the people you follow post. </li></ul>

Tinyurl <ul><li>A service that shortens URLs so they take up fewer characters in a tweet. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>(Twitter automatically shortens your links to TinyURLs if they’re too long.) </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Alternatives to TinyURL becoming popular. </li></ul><ul><ul><li> – Shorter, & gives stats. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li> – Very short links. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>SnipURL ( )– simliar to TinyURL. </li></ul></ul>

  15. 17. Fail Whale Sometimes Twitter saturates. Wait 10 seconds or so and it usually goes away!
