My bishop asked me to give a lesson on using technology at church. Specifically, he asked that I address the right and wrong ways to use mobile devices during Sunday School, etc. He also gave me permission to discuss how we can use technology on the other six days of the week.

LDS in 2013: How We Can Use Technology To Live And Share The Gospel

  1. 1. LDS In 2013 How We Can Use Technology To Live And Share The Gospel
  2. 2. • Your gospel study is more effective when you are taught by the Holy Ghost. • He will bring knowledge and conviction that will bless your life and allow you to bless the lives of others. • Your faith in Jesus Christ will increase. Your desire to repent and improve will grow. - Preach My Gospel
  3. 3. • Successful gospel study requires desire and action. • “For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost.” 1 Nephi 10:19 • As you hunger to know the words of eternal life and as you allow these words to “sink deep into your heart,” the Holy Ghost will open your mind and heart to greater light and understanding. - Preach My Gospel
  4. 4. • Learning the gospel is a process of revelation. • To Oliver Cowdery the Lord said: “Behold, you have not understood; you have supposed that I would give it unto you, when you took no thought save it was to ask me. But behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right.” - Preach My Gospel
  5. 5. • During church on Sundays, how can we make an effort to be taught by the Holy Ghost? • What are things that can distract us while we’re at church?
  6. 6. • “I think most of us intuitively understand how important the fundamentals are. It is just that we sometimes get distracted by so many things that seem more enticing.” • “It is so easy for the basic gospel message to get lost amidst the deluge of information that hits us from all sides.” - President Uchtdorf, October 2010
  7. 7. “We would do well to focus on the significant, lift up our eyes, and truly see the things that matter most. Let us be mindful of the foundational precepts our Heavenly Father has given to His children that will establish the basis of a rich and fruitful mortal life with promises of eternal happiness. They will teach us to do “all these things … in wisdom and order; for it is not requisite that [we] should run faster than [we have] strength. [But] it is expedient that [we] should be diligent, [and] thereby … win the prize.” - President Uchtdorf, October 2010
  8. 8. “For those using the Internet and mobile phones, there are new ways to invite others to “come and see.” Let’s make sharing our faith online more a part of our daily life. LDS.org, Mormon.org, Facebook, Twitter—all provide opportunities.” - Elder Andersen, April 2013
  9. 9. • Use the Spirit as you find ways to share the gospel online. Have courage to share your testimony of the Savior when you feel prompted by the Spirit. Try to help those you associate with online realize the power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. -LDS.org • “As you participate in this conversation and utilize the tools of new media, remember who you are—Latter-day Saints. . . . There is no need to argue or contend with others regarding our beliefs. There is no need to become defensive or belligerent. Our position is solid; the Church is true.” - Elder Ballard
  10. 10. 4 ways LDS.org encourages members to share online:
  11. 11. • Family History and Genealogy is now easier than ever before. • New tools allow us to find the names of those in our family tree and discover stories from their lives. • Willing and capable guides in our ward as well as nearby Family History Centers. • More interest in this topic than ever before means it can be a missionary tool too.
  12. 12. “The information and entertainment provided through these media can increase your ability to learn, communicate, and become a force for good in the world. However, some information and entertainment can lead you away from righteous living. Choose wisely when using media because whatever you read, listen to, or look at has an effect on you. Select only media that uplifts you.” - For The Strength Of Youth
  13. 13. Do not attend, view, or participate in anything that is vulgar, immoral, violent, or pornographic in any way. Do not participate in anything that presents immorality or violence as acceptable. Have the courage to walk out of a movie, change your music, or turn off a computer, television, or mobile device if what you see or hear drives away the Spirit. - For The Strength Of Youth
  14. 14. Guard your safety and the safety of others by taking great care about what personal information and images you share through technology. Do not communicate anything over the Internet or through texting that would be inappropriate to share in person. Obey the laws that govern sharing music, movies, and other copyrighted items. - For The Strength Of Youth
  15. 15. Take care that your use of media does not dull your sensitivity to the Spirit or interfere with your personal relationships with others. Spending long periods of time using the Internet or a mobile device, playing video games, or watching television or other media can keep you from valuable interactions with other people. Be careful that your use of social media does not replace spending time with your family and friends. - For The Strength Of Youth
