1. 1. THE NERVOUS SYSTEM By : Cassie Turkstra Grade: 5 School: Fessenden
 2. 2. Major Organs

The Spinal Cord

The brain

 3. 3. The Brain

Structure – The brain is a pink jelly-like organ that is folded in half to make sure it can fit properly inside your head.

Function – The brain is the most important organ and it controls everything in your body with electrical impulses such as body temperature and heart rate.

 4. 4. The Spinal Cord

Structure –The spinal cord is a bundle of nerve fibres ( technically called axons.)

Function –The spinal cord is basically the “information high way of the body", messages are sent back and forth between the brain and the rest of your body. For example touch, temperature and signals that tell your muscles to move

 5. 5. Hair Follicles

Structure - A group of epidermal cells at the base of a tube like depression.

Function –They make goose bumps.

 6. 6. Facial Nerves

Function - it is the seventh cranial nerve and it performs both motor and sensory functions.

Structure - begins in the brain stem and branches out into the face ,neck, salivary, glands and outer ear.

 7. 7. Relationships with other Systems

Relates to the muscular system because the nerves send messages to the muscles to tell you if something hurt or is wrong and hurt in your body.

In the cardiovascular system the nervous system modulates heart rate, contrractile strength and vascular tone

-muscular system hand. -cardio

system

 8. 8. Healthy Effects

Eat a lot of potassium

Calcium

Exercise

Vitamin d and b12

Practice writing for at least 15 min per day as carefully as you can.

 9. 9. Harmful effects

Alcohol

Drugs

Messes with the brain

Tobacco

hallucinogens

 10. 10. Common Diseases

Spinal Diastrophisms –mostly from development of the spinal cord.

Epilepsy –comes from recurring seizures in an individual.

Degenerative spine disease –occurs over time .

 11. 11. Interesting Facts

Millions of nerve cells in the human body.

A gown mans brain would way up to 1375 will a woman would come to 1275 grams on average.

The human spinal cord contains to around 13,500,000 neurons.

The right side of the brain controls the left side of the body and the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body.

 12. 12. Interesting Facts

the nervous system tells the brain when you hurt of have pain.

As we grow older the brain loses a gram each year.

The brain is responsible for a lot of things like emotions.

The brain also controls pain and pressure.
