Nature Man made - Art & Design Assignment - summary
Unit Coverage: Unit 1 & 2
Use this summary as a checklist of evidence to produce for each Unit
In this project you have covered TWO pathways; 3D Product Design (Lamp) and 2D Surface Design
(Print). The core of both ‘pathways’ is the use of drawing, design research and the development of ideas
through experiment and evaluation. You will have explored new materials and techniques experimentally
before refining your final outcomes.
During this project you will have learnt about
• The uses of drawing and analysis of the formal elements to explore their potential.
• Referencing and using sources creatively – developing ideas towards a 2D & 3D outcome.
• Recording specific techniques and processes of making.
• On-going commentary recording your experience, demonstrating understanding of processes;
materials and techniques, suggesting and producing further development.
• Making links to the work of artists/designers and relating it to your work.
• Completing work and presenting your ideas to a good standard.
**Use the following slides as a checklist to summarise the work you have produced - show how you have
met the assessment criteria**

Nature Man made – Art & Design
Brief Unit Coverage: Unit 1 & Unit 2
The assignment is designed to produced opportunities to produce evidence for these
units
Unit 1: 2D 3D Visual Language
You need to produce work, which demonstrates
development of skills and creativity in using visual
language
The work should be organised and annotated to show
your evaluative skills and development over time. Also
experimentation with mark-making and object-
making techniques, formal elements and sources.
Evidence should be from contextual studies,
developmental and/or final project work
Unit 2: Materials, Techniques and Processes
Produce work, which demonstrates your
understanding of skills in using media, materials,
techniques, processes and associated technology. This
should include; samples, trials, notes, records and
exploratory project work

Slide 2 – Starting points
Assessment criteria: Examples of ‘primary and secondary sources with a description of how others have used visual language in their work’
These could include: drawings and photographs from the Cass Sculpture Park, studies of natural and man-made objects, artists,
designer research, analysis of lamp design and contemporary retail surface design research, photos
Artist researches
Lamp design analysis
Initial Designs
Slide 3 – add your own title here
Assessment criteria: examples of your work where you have used a combination of mark-making and object-making to develop ideas and intentions – title
work with description
These could include ‘designer analysis’ and use of line, tone, structure shape, drawings – lamp design. Design development work for pattern with
surface design and stencil, homework research studies, sketch models and 3D development work
Slide 4 – Following the research analysis studies made
Assessment criteria: Demonstrate an example (of 2D and 3D work) and commentary of how you have used visual language (line,
colour, shape, structure) in your work and how it is linked and has been influenced by others’ work.
Examples: Homework research, studies and development produced for Lamp design (10 Nov) and Surface design (17
Nov).
Slide 5 - add your own title here
Assessment criteria: Examples where you have worked with a range of techniques with information describing the characteristics
of materials you have used
Examples: Production diary describing the materials and techniques used (Lamp design and screen printing)
Also use of mixed media, colour, models, 3D experiments with materials and techniques in the workshop, cut stencils for screen
printing, putting designs into repeat using Photoshop. Visualising the use of your art and design work.
Slide 6 - add your own title here
Assessment criteria: Use materials, techniques and technology safely in creating and developing work. Experiment and explore the
potential of using these to develop ideas
Example: Demonstration of techniques and Health & Safety rules of working in the workshop and screen printing. Examples of
work developed; drawings, models, stencils, printed samples and how you have developed them.
When in the work shop there were many health and
safety rules.
This includes; wearing a overall and tying long hair up
at all times in the work shop. Also no headphones or
talking to people using machines.
When using machines appropriate protection must be
worn. For example Protective goggles for band saw,
gloves for line bender or vacuum.
When Print Screening, I made sure I had an overall
on and my hair tied back as the inks we were
using are staining and the overalls protect our
clothing and tying up our hair helped us to get
hair off our face so we could see and
concentrate.
Evaluation Summary (include 4 main points)
Assessment criteria: evaluation of your work is vital to your development as an artist/designer –it is important to question your
approach, what have you learnt, how have you developed an idea and what you would do differently in future to improve.
Checklist to cover: Write bullet points and support with examples of your work
Evaluation of the use visual language in your work and how it was informed by looking at others’ approach (Unit 1)
Analyse and evaluate the creative potential and limitations of your use of materials, techniques and technology (Unit 2)
Evaluation includes on-going annotation in sketchbook and a final project evaluation which should be included in your sketchbook.

Project Evaluation Sheet
Evaluation for Manmade and Nature Project
Introduction
For this project, Nature/Man-made we were asked to look at and explore the visual qualities suggested by nature and Man-made and use this to creatively represent it in the form of 2d and 3d. We learnt about motifs; shapes
form pattern texture etc. to express what we find in our research from artists we find, looking online at Tumblr and Pinterest for interesting examples of man-made and nature art and drawing we drew when we went to the
Cass sculpture park.
We spit the project into 2. The first part which was looking at a way of displaying the elements from man-made and nature though some sort of 3d sculpture. We did this by creating a lamp inspired by both manmade and
nature. The second part was looking at how I would display these elements using some means of 2d art. Here, I did a surface design. I designed a pattern which could be used for anywhere from interior design to textile
designs.
Through this project I have learnt a variety of skills. In the 3d course I learnt how to use adobe illustrator and the laser cutter. Also how to use the vacuum and line bender in the workshop. In general I learnt how to use
machines which would do things I would otherwise have had to do using a band saw and MDF (the skills I learnt in the equivalents project). These skills involved a lot of computer design using adobe illustrator. This made the
design more accurate and was easier as it was all done on a programme and was less likely to make straight lines and not have to sand anything down. I also did do some work in the workshop without a computer, for
example When making the sketch models, I learnt how to sand, cut and glue MDF, wire, card and paper. In the 2d part I learnt how to use Photoshop, how to screen print and about different types of surface designs.
Time management
Through this project I think I have improved my time management by giving myself a timetable to work from. I learnt from the equivalents project that I needed to annotate and to link everything back to the theme so I have
done this. Although thing which I have not done as well is displaying my work. I think I need to add more pictures or more writing so that my pages are busier and are better organised.
Research
In the 3d project I started my research through Tumblr, Pinterest and google images by looking into lamp designs inspired by man and then inspired by nature and see what elements others have used to create there lamps. I
then picked 3 lamps which I thought were interesting and analysed them helping me to develop initial ideas. In the 2d part, I researched into man-made and natural objects. I looked at shape tone and natural patterns which I
then developed to make into repeated patterns.
I also research some artists which were related to each project, for example for the 3d section I researched Susan and Pete hill who are artist who work on large scale models looking at man-made and natural elements. And for
the 2d section I looked at Angie Lewin who is a print maker who takes inspiration from nature and designs patterns and designs.
I found this research useful as I looking at different people’s work helps develop a lot of initial ideas which I can then develop. I used a variety of sources in this project. These include the internet (google Tumblr Pinterest) and
books (library). I also used images from the Cass art trip at the beginning of the project.
Development
In the 3d section I developed my ideas a lot. For example when designing a lamp I took inspiration from a source (an image I found or took) and drew 3 or 4 designs for a lamp and then I picked 3 which I made and then
developed further and then developed again before making my finial design. I also designed some lamps in the style of Susan and Pete hill. Here I could of improved and done more by analysing and doing more artist
researches.
In the 2d section I collected images which I liked linking to the theme of nature and man-made (street light against the sky, plants on a brick wall) and drew them looking at shape. Then using that image I selected an area
which I made into a pattern. Developing it on each step. I also designed a pattern in style of Angie Lewins art work. I could of improved here by doing more artist and creating more designs in the style of them so had a good
variety of work I would work from.
I used drawings a lot during this project. In 3d, I used it by drawing out my designs before choosing the best onces to develop and also to add improvemets ontop of drawing I had already reveloped. Also do draw before
goin over in pen. IN 2d I used dencil to draw out and experiment with repeat and patterns which when I was happy with, went over in pen and fine liner.
In 3d, the aspects which went well were the developmets of the initial ideas for the lamp. I felt lie I had enough sources of inspiration so I had a lot of variety when it came to ideas. In 2d the aspect of designing the stencil went
well as I designed it with shading but developed I to work with just 2 colors.
For the 2d section no materials were used but in the 3d section I used acrylic for my final designs it give a shinny and simple finish which I would not of got easily with MDF or blue foam.
Through this project I looked at many different sources and people for inspiration and influence. Artists include pete hill who I took inspiration for its used of mixing man-made and natural elemenst beautifully. And also Angie
Lewin who takes elements from nature and turns them into a comic like design, very simple and very effective.
For the 2d project, I tried to make a pattern which took something detailed and beautiful such as nature itself and visually represent it in a more simple and cartoon like, much like angie Lewins work.
With 3d I wanted to create something which showed both nature and man-made together in a lamp design. I did this by combining the two element together and developing them from a simple drawing to a final project.
Final Outcomes
For 3d my final piece was a lamp. It was made of acrylic and was a frame with a light bulb engulfed by leaves. I used adobe illustrator to create the pieces and printed them off using a laser cutter. This meant that my design
was accurate and had well finished edges were perfect. This gave it a great finish. Although the bending of the pieces took some patience and a lot of preparation in making moulds etc.
The design reflects manmade elements (this being the light bulb, a manmade object) and natural elements (the leaves surrounding the light). I think this goes with the brief as I have created something which “suggests the
visual qualities of manmade and nature”.
If I was to repeat and redo some things I would add a stand to the lamp to make it look like a man-made light and in general I would do more research onto different lamps such as create a mood board which I could
reference while designing my lamp.
For the 2d project, my finial project was my surface design of the inside of orange. I used screen printing to create a small version which I then scanned in to put in repeat. I then put that onto objects and material which I
thought would look good on using Photoshop.
I think this went very well as it reflects the project brief. It shows the element from nature and shows it visually through the use of pattern.
If I was to repeat this project I would do more design experiments inspired by artists so I had more to design from. Also I would add more developments before setting on final design although I really like my actually finally
design.
Overall I have learnt a variety of skills from how to use computer designs to help me make my design. (Photoshop and adobe illustrator) to how to use more machines I the work shop including the vacuum and laser cutter. I
have also learnt how to use shape and tone from different sources and incorporate them into my own design as well as how to develop them effectively.

Nature man made project summary

  • 1. Nature Man made - Art & Design Assignment - summary Unit Coverage: Unit 1 & 2 Use this summary as a checklist of evidence to produce for each Unit In this project you have covered TWO pathways; 3D Product Design (Lamp) and 2D Surface Design (Print). The core of both ‘pathways’ is the use of drawing, design research and the development of ideas through experiment and evaluation. You will have explored new materials and techniques experimentally before refining your final outcomes. During this project you will have learnt about • The uses of drawing and analysis of the formal elements to explore their potential. • Referencing and using sources creatively – developing ideas towards a 2D & 3D outcome. • Recording specific techniques and processes of making. • On-going commentary recording your experience, demonstrating understanding of processes; materials and techniques, suggesting and producing further development. • Making links to the work of artists/designers and relating it to your work. • Completing work and presenting your ideas to a good standard. **Use the following slides as a checklist to summarise the work you have produced - show how you have met the assessment criteria** Viktor Timofeev ‘X’ at Cass Sculpture Park
  • 2. Nature Man made – Art & Design Brief Unit Coverage: Unit 1 & Unit 2 The assignment is designed to produced opportunities to produce evidence for these units Unit 1: 2D 3D Visual Language You need to produce work, which demonstrates development of skills and creativity in using visual language The work should be organised and annotated to show your evaluative skills and development over time. Also experimentation with mark-making and object- making techniques, formal elements and sources. Evidence should be from contextual studies, developmental and/or final project work Unit 2: Materials, Techniques and Processes Produce work, which demonstrates your understanding of skills in using media, materials, techniques, processes and associated technology. This should include; samples, trials, notes, records and exploratory project work

  • 4. Slide 2 – Starting points Assessment criteria: Examples of ‘primary and secondary sources with a description of how others have used visual language in their work’ These could include: drawings and photographs from the Cass Sculpture Park, studies of natural and man-made objects, artists, designer research, analysis of lamp design and contemporary retail surface design research, photos Artist researches Lamp design analysis Initial Designs
  • 5. Slide 3 – add your own title here Assessment criteria: examples of your work where you have used a combination of mark-making and object-making to develop ideas and intentions – title work with description These could include ‘designer analysis’ and use of line, tone, structure shape, drawings – lamp design. Design development work for pattern with surface design and stencil, homework research studies, sketch models and 3D development work
  • 6. Slide 4 – Following the research analysis studies made Assessment criteria: Demonstrate an example (of 2D and 3D work) and commentary of how you have used visual language (line, colour, shape, structure) in your work and how it is linked and has been influenced by others’ work. Examples: Homework research, studies and development produced for Lamp design (10 Nov) and Surface design (17 Nov).
  • 7. Slide 5 - add your own title here Assessment criteria: Examples where you have worked with a range of techniques with information describing the characteristics of materials you have used Examples: Production diary describing the materials and techniques used (Lamp design and screen printing) Also use of mixed media, colour, models, 3D experiments with materials and techniques in the workshop, cut stencils for screen printing, putting designs into repeat using Photoshop. Visualising the use of your art and design work.
  • 8. Slide 6 - add your own title here Assessment criteria: Use materials, techniques and technology safely in creating and developing work. Experiment and explore the potential of using these to develop ideas Example: Demonstration of techniques and Health & Safety rules of working in the workshop and screen printing. Examples of work developed; drawings, models, stencils, printed samples and how you have developed them. When in the work shop there were many health and safety rules. This includes; wearing a overall and tying long hair up at all times in the work shop. Also no headphones or talking to people using machines. When using machines appropriate protection must be worn. For example Protective goggles for band saw, gloves for line bender or vacuum. When Print Screening, I made sure I had an overall on and my hair tied back as the inks we were using are staining and the overalls protect our clothing and tying up our hair helped us to get hair off our face so we could see and concentrate.
  • 9. Evaluation Summary (include 4 main points) Assessment criteria: evaluation of your work is vital to your development as an artist/designer –it is important to question your approach, what have you learnt, how have you developed an idea and what you would do differently in future to improve. Checklist to cover: Write bullet points and support with examples of your work Evaluation of the use visual language in your work and how it was informed by looking at others’ approach (Unit 1) Analyse and evaluate the creative potential and limitations of your use of materials, techniques and technology (Unit 2) Evaluation includes on-going annotation in sketchbook and a final project evaluation which should be included in your sketchbook. • 10. Evaluation for Manmade and Nature Project Introduction For this project, Nature/Man-made we were asked to look at and explore the visual qualities suggested by nature and Man-made and use this to creatively represent it in the form of 2d and 3d. We learnt about motifs; shapes form pattern texture etc. to express what we find in our research from artists we find, looking online at Tumblr and Pinterest for interesting examples of man-made and nature art and drawing we drew when we went to the Cass sculpture park. We spit the project into 2. The first part which was looking at a way of displaying the elements from man-made and nature though some sort of 3d sculpture. We did this by creating a lamp inspired by both manmade and nature. The second part was looking at how I would display these elements using some means of 2d art. Here, I did a surface design. I designed a pattern which could be used for anywhere from interior design to textile designs. Through this project I have learnt a variety of skills. In the 3d course I learnt how to use adobe illustrator and the laser cutter. Also how to use the vacuum and line bender in the workshop. In general I learnt how to use machines which would do things I would otherwise have had to do using a band saw and MDF (the skills I learnt in the equivalents project). These skills involved a lot of computer design using adobe illustrator. This made the design more accurate and was easier as it was all done on a programme and was less likely to make straight lines and not have to sand anything down. I also did do some work in the workshop without a computer, for example When making the sketch models, I learnt how to sand, cut and glue MDF, wire, card and paper. In the 2d part I learnt how to use Photoshop, how to screen print and about different types of surface designs. Time management Through this project I think I have improved my time management by giving myself a timetable to work from. I learnt from the equivalents project that I needed to annotate and to link everything back to the theme so I have done this. Although thing which I have not done as well is displaying my work. I think I need to add more pictures or more writing so that my pages are busier and are better organised. Research In the 3d project I started my research through Tumblr, Pinterest and google images by looking into lamp designs inspired by man and then inspired by nature and see what elements others have used to create there lamps. I then picked 3 lamps which I thought were interesting and analysed them helping me to develop initial ideas. In the 2d part, I researched into man-made and natural objects. I looked at shape tone and natural patterns which I then developed to make into repeated patterns. I also research some artists which were related to each project, for example for the 3d section I researched Susan and Pete hill who are artist who work on large scale models looking at man-made and natural elements. And for the 2d section I looked at Angie Lewin who is a print maker who takes inspiration from nature and designs patterns and designs. I found this research useful as I looking at different people’s work helps develop a lot of initial ideas which I can then develop. I used a variety of sources in this project. These include the internet (google Tumblr Pinterest) and books (library). I also used images from the Cass art trip at the beginning of the project. Development In the 3d section I developed my ideas a lot. For example when designing a lamp I took inspiration from a source (an image I found or took) and drew 3 or 4 designs for a lamp and then I picked 3 which I made and then developed further and then developed again before making my finial design. I also designed some lamps in the style of Susan and Pete hill. Here I could of improved and done more by analysing and doing more artist researches. In the 2d section I collected images which I liked linking to the theme of nature and man-made (street light against the sky, plants on a brick wall) and drew them looking at shape. Then using that image I selected an area which I made into a pattern. Developing it on each step. I also designed a pattern in style of Angie Lewins art work. I could of improved here by doing more artist and creating more designs in the style of them so had a good variety of work I would work from. I used drawings a lot during this project. In 3d, I used it by drawing out my designs before choosing the best onces to develop and also to add improvemets ontop of drawing I had already reveloped. Also do draw before goin over in pen. In 2d the aspect of designing the stencil went well as I designed it with shading but developed I to work with just 2 colors. And also Angie Lewin who takes elements from nature and turns them into a comic like design, very simple and very effective. Final Outcomes For 3d my final piece was a lamp. It was made of acrylic and was a frame with a light bulb engulfed by leaves. I used adobe illustrator to create the pieces and printed them off using a laser cutter. This meant that my design was accurate and had well finished edges were perfect. This gave it a great finish. Although the bending of the pieces took some patience and a lot of preparation in making moulds etc. The design reflects manmade elements (this being the light bulb, a manmade object) and natural elements (the leaves surrounding the light). I think this goes with the brief as I have created something which “suggests the visual qualities of manmade and nature”. If I was to repeat and redo some things I would add a stand to the lamp to make it look like a man-made light and in general I would do more research onto different lamps such as create a mood board which I could reference while designing my lamp. For the 2d project, my finial project was my surface design of the inside of orange. I used screen printing to create a small version which I then scanned in to put in repeat. I then put that onto objects and material which I thought would look good on using Photoshop. I think this went very well as it reflects the project brief. It shows the element from nature and shows it visually through the use of pattern. If I was to repeat this project I would do more design experiments inspired by artists so I had more to design from. Also I would add more developments before setting on final design although I really like my actually finally design. Overall I have learnt a variety of skills from how to use computer designs to help me make my design. (Photoshop and adobe illustrator) to how to use more machines I the work shop including the vacuum and laser cutter. I have also learnt how to use shape and tone from different sources and incorporate them into my own design as well as how to develop them effectively.
