Continuous improvement smaic model

  1. 1. SMAIC Model of continuous improvement Select Measure Analyze Improve Control
  2. 2. Select
  3. 3. SelectThis phase selects or defines the improvement projects. It identifiescritical customer requirements and links them to business needs. Italso defines the business processes to be undertaken for continuousimprovement.
  4. 4. Objectives of Select phase • To identify the process or product for improvement. • To develop an action plan.
  5. 5. Criteria for selection In general, any process you choose to improve should be:• A process that is important to meeting your customers requirements and / or• A process that is critical to the successful achievement of your organizations goals.
  6. 6. Measure
  7. 7. MeasureThis phase involves selecting product characteristic, mappingrespective process, making necessary measurements andrecording the results of the process. This is essentially a datacollection phase.
  8. 8. Objectives ofMeasurement phase • Collect baseline performance data for identified projects. • Understand current problems.
  9. 9. Analyze
  10. 10. AnalyzeIn this phase an action plan is created to close the “gap” between howthings currently work and how the organization would like them to workin order to meet the goals for a particular product or service.
  11. 11. Objective of Analysis phase• The objective of this phase is to study the current processes in terms of what?, who?, how?, when? and where?.• To establish an improvement goal or the performance objective.
  12. 12. Improve
  13. 13. ImproveThis phase involves improving processes/product performancecharacteristics for achieving desired results and goals. This phaseinvolves application of scientific tools and techniques for makingtangible improvements in profitability and customer satisfaction.
  14. 14. Objectives ofImprovement phase• To develop a proposed solution to the existing problems.• To confirm that the proposed solution will meet the desired quality improvement goals.• To identify resources required for successful implementation of the solution.• To plan and execute actual improvements.
  15. 15. Control
  16. 16. ControlThis phase requires the process conditions to be properlydocumented and monitored. This phase requires institutionalizingSMAIC into day to day working of the organization. In this phase thegains derived by certain specific projects are applied to the otherprojects as well for optimum business results.
  17. 17. Objectives of control phase • To ensure that our processes stay in control after the improvement solution has been implemented and • To quickly detect the out of control state and determine the associated causes so that actions can be taken to control the problem before non-conformances are produced.
