Content of the National Curriculum? <ul><li>The National Curriculum sets out: </li></ul><ul><li>The subjects taught (core, foundation) </li></ul><ul><li>The knowledge, skills and understanding required in each subject </li></ul><ul><li>Standards or attainment targets in each subject that teachers can use to measure progress and plan future learning </li></ul><ul><li>How progress is assessed and reported </li></ul>
  5. 5. Why Reform? <ul><li>To give recognition for less academic and technical pupils in offering a solid grounding for their future </li></ul><ul><li>Keep up to date and improve </li></ul><ul><li>Allows mixture of theory and practical experience </li></ul>

Aim of Reform <ul><li>Make it easier for young people to make effective learning choices </li></ul><ul><li>Help employers and higher education providers understand the qualifications that young people have gained. </li></ul><ul><li>By 2013 the majority of young people will access qualifications through one of the four nationally available qualification routes: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>GCSE & A levels </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Diplomas </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Apprenticeships </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Foundation learning </li></ul></ul>

Diplomas <ul><li>New qualification that combines theoretical study with practical experience </li></ul><ul><li>Different ways of learning – e.g. Learning by doing </li></ul><ul><li>By 2013 there will be 17 Diplomas as a route into higher education and the world of work. </li></ul><ul><li>Available at 3 levels : </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Foundation </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Higher </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Advanced </li></ul></ul>

Apprenticeship <ul><li>Accredited qualifications through employers </li></ul><ul><li>Combines paid work with on the job training </li></ul><ul><li>Wage subsides for small businesses </li></ul><ul><li>Every suitably qualified young person should have the opportunity to an apprenticeship place by 2013 </li></ul>

Foundation learning <ul><li>National suite of learning for 14-19s at Entry Level or Level 1 </li></ul><ul><li>The main aim is to support progression at the learner's own pace </li></ul><ul><li>Learners develop a full range of skills in a coherent manner – use personalised learning </li></ul><ul><li>Progress to higher level qualification </li></ul>

Effects of the Reform <ul><li>Value of Diploma </li></ul><ul><li>Communication between schools, higher education and employers </li></ul><ul><li>Increased workload on teachers </li></ul><ul><li>Better qualified UK workforce with different skills for the future </li></ul><ul><li>With more interaction between educational institutions and employers, better connections and partnerships can be created </li></ul>
