Plasma panel

  1. 1. Plasma Panel DisplayCathode ray tubes produce crisp, vibrant images, but they do have a serious drawback: They are bulky. In order to increase the screen width in a CRT set, you also have to increase the length of the tube. Consequently, any big- screen CRT television is going to weigh a ton and take up a sizable chunk of a room.
  2. 2. Recently, a new alternative comes: thePlasma flat panel display also calledgas-discharge displays. These TVs havewide screens, comparable to the largestCRT sets, but they are only about 6inches (15 cm) thick.Inside the Display:The xenon andneon gas in a plasma television iscontained in hundreds of thousands oftiny cells positioned between two platesof glass.
  3. 3. A series of Vertical conductingRibbons(electrodes) is placed on oneglass panel & a set of horizontalribbons is built into other glass panel. The address electrodes sit behind thecells, along the rear glass plate. Thetransparent display electrodes, whichare surrounded by an insulating dielectricmaterial and covered by a magnesiumoxide protective layer, are mountedabove the cell, along the front glass plate.
  4. 4. The vertical and horizontalelectrodes form a basic grid. When the intersecting electrodes are charged (with a voltage difference between them), an electric current flows through the gas in the cell. The current creates a rapid flow of charged particles, which stimulates the gas atoms to release ultraviolet photons.
  5. 5. The released ultraviolet photonsinteract with phosphor materialcoated on the inside wall of the cell.to break down into a glowing plasma of electrons and ions. Picture definition stored in refresh buffer Refresh rate is 60 times/sec.
  6. 6. Advantage of plasma display technology is :1.) You can produce a very wide screen using extremely thin materials.2.) The image is very bright and looks good from almost every angle because each pixel is lit individually.Drawback of this technology has been the price.
  7. 7. What is Plasma? The central element in a fluorescent light is a plasma, a gas made up of free-flowing ions (electrically charged atoms) and electrons (negatively charged particles).A dielectric, or electrical insulator, is a substance that is highly resistant to electric current. Although a vacuum is also an excellent dielectric, the following discussion applies primarily to physical substances.
