5. What do I need to get into
the Library?
Your UEL ID card is your
Library card
You need your ID card:
– To enter any of our libraries
– To borrow books
– To print
– To photocopy
It will cost £12 to replace a
lost ID card
Look after your ID card
Do not let anyone use it
You are responsible for
everything taken out on your
card
You also need your ID card to
exit our Stratford Library

• All our libraries have spaces for
your different needs:

7. Opening Hours
• The library is open 24 hours
7 days a week during term
time
• Monday to Friday - the Library
is staffed between
9am to 9pm
• Saturday and Sunday - the
Library is staffed between
12 pm to 5pm.
• Self Service is available 24

• The Online Library is open 24
hrs daily
8. How many items can I
borrow?
• Staff – 15 items
• Students – 15 items
• Online Library is accessible
24hrs
• PHD thesis and
• dissertations can be borrowed
to use in the Library
• Digitized thesis are available
via our Institutional Repository
– ROAR
• Print journal articles can be
read in the Library and
photocopied
• There are reference resources
like dictionaries to be read in
the Library
• You can borrow:
• Books
• DVDs – film and music
• Tablets - Samsung
9. How long can I keep a book
for?
• All books can be
borrowed for:
• One week initially
• Short loans
• Students with known disability
can keep books for two weeks
at a time.
NB:
You can keep a book as long as
you need to but must bring it
back if it is requested by
another user
10. RETURN ITEMS LATE?
If items are returned late, you will pay the following fines:
One week Loan - £1 per day –
Short Loan - 50p per hr
You cannot borrow if your fines get up to £25 .
You will have a seven day grace period to return books and if you
still do not return ,you will incur £8 fine per book
11. How can I pay fines?
Fines can be paid in a number of ways:
Via Chip and Pin at the Issue Desk
Via cash payment at the Issue Desk
Via Telephone payment when off campus with Chip and PIN
debit or credit card
Via self service fine payment machine on Campus, using coins
12. How can i avoid paying
Fines?
• Loan items will be automatically renewed on the due date.
• Email will be sent to you if the item has been reserved and
needs to be returned.
• Check your email for library mail
Books will not be renewed automatically:
If the item has been reserved by another user.
In that case, you need to bring the books back
You can also check your Library account:
• By signing into the Library Search
13. How do i find books or
articles on my reading list?
• Using the Library Search you
can search for :
– books, DVDs, and
electronic books
– Reserve and Renew books
– Search for Journal articles
– Request Interlibrary Loans
– Locate items on the shelf
– Search for digitised
resources
– NB: you need to be on the
Internet to access most of
the above functions as well
as read electronic books
and articles
– Reading all your
recommended readings
will help you get quickly
knowledgable about your
subject.
14. Your recommended reading
• Make sure you search
for all books you are
meant to read.
• This can be found in
your module
handbook.
• Once you have this,
use the Library search
to look for them
• They will either be in
print or in electronic
format.
• If they are print books,
locate them on the
shelves and borrow
them
• If they are electronic,
then you need your
Athens username and
password to read
them online.
18. How do I find resources for
my subject area?

19. Borrowing and returning
items
Self service machine enables
you to:
• Borrow, return and renew
items
• Pay fines
• You need a PIN to take
books out.
• The initial PIN is 0000 –
ask Library staff to change
PIN.
• To take books out, press
your ID card on the reader
• Type your PIN
• Pass your books through
the laser.
Close your account and print out a
receipt of your transaction.
Keep receipts for your record.
All our Libraries have self service
machines.
21. Access to other University
Libraries
You can visit other university Libraries
Sconul Access – This enables staff, Part time,
Distance Learners, Students on placement and Full
time Post graduate students to borrow or use the
resources of participating universities.
Full time undergraduates can have reference access
to the resources
Go to the SCONUL website for an online application
form.
Once you receive the approval email, take that along
with UEL ID card to the university Library you have
applied to go to
23. Access to other Libraries
British Library – Books
and journal articles not
available in UEL libraries
can be requested via
Interlibrary This service
is available to all staff
and students
It can take less than a
week or more to obtain an
item
• You can also visit the British
Library yourself.
• Take an ID and proof of
address with you
EDUROAM - UEL staff and
students are able to access
the internet whilst visiting
other Universities in the UK
and beyond.

You can also see where the
libraries are and find out how

• Use this when you are
planning to visit another
Library.

27. Printing in Docklands
• Students can print their
assignments in all of our
Libraries.
• To do that, there needs to
be enough money on your
ID card.

• 5p – A4 Black & White
• 10p – A3 Black & White
• 25p – A4 Coloured
• 50p – A3 Coloured

• Ask a Librarian is
an online enquiry service. Use
this to send us queries about
using resources and Library
services.

between 1-7pm Mon – Friday
and 1-5pm Sat & Sunday,
during term time.

29. Printing, photocopying and
scanning
• You need your ID card to print,
photocopy or scan

designated areas within the
libraries.

equipment and other
stationeries.
• You can bind your projects
using our heat binding
