  2. 2.  At the end of the 19th century the United States become a world power.  Between 1889 and 1904, the U.S. divided Samoa with the Germans, annexed Hawaii, wrestled the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico from Spain, and separated the Panama Canal Zone from Colombia.  American’s did not want to admit to being an imperialist country though because they didn’t want to be placed in the same company of the modern British, French, and German empires.
