  1. 1. DIGESTIVE SYSTEM PROCEDURES COLONOSCOPY LAVAGE HERNIOPLASTY CACHEXIA
  2. 2. COLONOSCOPY  Procedure helps detect cancer, polyps, ulcers, tumors and areas of inflammation or bleeding  Tissue samples are collected-biopsy and abdominal growths can be taken out  Colonoscope- instrument used in procedure, thin flexible tube (48-72 inches long)  Camera attached to colonoscope to take pictures and videos of large intestine, whole colon or part of small intestine can also be seen  Colon prep- stay home, drink fluid to clean out colon, takes 1-2 days, will experience diarrhea and frequent loose bowels, which will help to empty out stomach for procedure  Endoscopic exam that allows doctors to look at the interior lining of the large intestine (colon & rectum)
  3. 3. LAVAGEColonic Lavage  Tube usage for all lavage procedures  Irrigation or washing out of a body cavity-pleural  Pertains to stomach, bowel, peritoneal, pericardial cavity or hollow organs  Procedure obtains fluids for diagnostic cytology to detect hemorrhage in blunt trauma, or remove toxinsBronchoalveolar  Listed Several Lavage Procedures Lavage But There Are More:  Abdominal – infusion of saline into peritoneal cavity  Bronchoalveolar – percutaneous entry of a catheter between tracheal rings  Colonic – irrigation of the colon usually to remove ingested poisons
  4. 4. HERNIOPLASTY  Surgical operation for a correction of a Images of Inguinal Areas hernia; bulging of internal organs or tissues through a defect in the wall of a body cavity  Can occur in abdomen, groin, diaphragm, brain and at a site of a previous operation  3 Different Types of Repairs:  Herniotomy – surgical procedure in which hernia sac is removed without any repair of inguinal canal  Hernioplasty – combined with herniotomy but reinforced repair of the posterior inguinal canal wall with autogenous (patient’s own tissue) or heterogenous material, such as a mesh  Herniorrhapy – no autogenous or heterogenous material is used for reinforcement
  5. 5. CACHEXIA  A wasting syndrome – the loss of body mass that cannot be reversed nutritionally  Positive risk factor for death  Loss of weight, muscle, atrophy, fatigue, weakness and significant loss of appetite  If an affected person eats more calories, lean body mass will still be lost, indicating that a fundamental pathology (disease) is present  Prone to patient’s with cancer, AIDS, chronic obstructive lung disease, multiple sclerosis, congestive heart failure, tuberculosis, familial amyloid polyneuropathy, mercury poisoning and hormonal deficiency
