Who where the famous ‘superstars’ then?

Answer

“ Everyone in Great Britain is ‘football mad football crazy’ (that was a popular song back in 1966). All of the kids would play whenever we had a chance (recess, after school, weekends).”

“ When in 1966.”

“ Georgie Best, Bobby Clark, Jackie & Bobbie Charlton, [and] Nobby Stiles.”

(Georgie Best)

 4. 4. Question #3 Did you ever go to games? Do you remember the first game you saw? Who was playing? Can you remember any details of the game? Did you go with your family- or later in your life alone?

Answer

“ Well my parents were not big football fans (my dad liked rugby football and cricket) so I only got to go to one game when I was young and I had to sneak out to get to it!”

“ Yes it was Derby County FC vs. Bury FC (I lived near Derby when I was growing up).”

“ I remember that it was great fun to be at the pitch standing with all the other Derby supporters (back then there were no seats for most of the crowd).”

“ I went with my neighbor and I had to ‘borrow’ some money from my younger brother to buy the bus fare and ticket. My parents were really angry when I got back (I hadn’t told them I was going).”

 5. 5. Question #4 Did/Do you have any favorite: Players? Coaches? 7. 7. Question #6 Do/Did you play football? What league? Did/do you take it very seriously, have fun with it, or both?

Answer

“ Yes, I played for my school teams in England and here in Massachusetts. I only play occasionally now. I used to be very serious about it, but now I just have fun.”

 8. 8. Question #7 Are you disappointed in how the England National Team has been performing lately? World Cup?

Answer

“ Oh, England should always do better, I think. (to be cont.)

Answer

“ They are such different players, but [I think] it was time for Beckham to resign from international football.”

“ Beckham.”

 10. 10. Question #8 (cont.) If Beckham and Terry were going 1v1- who would you be rooting for from the sidelines? Do you like Beckham’s team (Real Madrid) or Terry’s team (Chelsea) more?

Answer

“ Beckham.”

“ Hmmmmmmmm…. Real Madrid.”

 11. 11. Question #9 When did you start REALLY following the England National Team? Do you still?

Answer

“ 1966.”

“ Yes, when they are on TV.”

 12. 12. Question #10 If you had to choose between rooting for England, or rooting for USA in world cup who would you root for? Why?

Answer

“ [That is] a very hard question. I enjoyed watching the US beat England about 10 years ago in Foxboro, so I guess I would root for the USA. I always seem to like the underdog team.”

 13. 13. Question #11 How do you feel when you’re in a football stadium? What makes you feel that way?

Answer

“ I feel happy and expectant. I always look forward to seeing those moments when a player sees an opportunity to make a pass or shot that no one else on the field sees. Creative plays is what sets football apart from American football and baseball.”

 14. 14. Question #12 Did/Does anyone else in your family play football? Did they get you into football?

Answer

“ No my family played other games.”

(Cricket)
 15. 15. Question #13 Have you ever done an interview like this before? If so, for what? When?

Answer

“ Not that I can remember.”

 16. 16. Question #14 Have you ever met a famous/semi-famous football player? If so: who? If so: how? If so: when?

Answer

“ No, although I did meet Roman Gabriel once. He was a famous American football player for the Los Angeles RAMS.”

 17. 17. Question #15 How do you think British football compares to American? How and why? Do you think that the players. Trainers, coaches, or mangers have more to do with it?

Answer

“ I think that British football is technically better because the club can afford better players. It is also more passionate as the fans and players feel it is important. A coach/manager was once asked which was more important football or life and he answered, “Football is life.””

“ I think that the passion comes from the fans who pay the money, so that their clubs can afford better players.”

 18. 18. Question #16 What advice do you have for someone who is just starting in the game?

Answer

“ Remember that it is a game and always have fun, but then play and practice as much as you can to improve your TIC.”

T= technique

I= insight

C= communication

“ Oh- and watch professional players play.”

 19. 19. Question #17 How do you think coaching has changed your life? What do you thing is the hardest part? Do you enjoy it?

Answer

“ I am really glad I decided to coach as I had forgotten how important football is to me. ABYS has some really good coaching programs to train coaches.”

“ The hardest part is explaining to parents how or why their child is not the best player in the league or on the team. Another hard part is teaching insight (see TIC on slide 16). This is where players to become good must learn to anticipate what their opponents and teammates are going to do before they do it.”

“ I really enjoy coaching and trying passion my love of the game.”

“ I first coached when I was in high school then I coached Claire’s brothers.”

“ Yes, but it doesn’t pay enough!”

 20. 20. Question #18 Have you ever gotten a bad injury? What did you hurt? How did you hurt it?

Answer

“ Yes, I had to stop playing when I tore my ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in my knee just after college (while playing soccer). It took me 10 years to trust a surgeon to fix it.”

 21. 21. Question #19 Did you ever see the 2966 World Cup? Live? Video recorded?

Answer

“ Yes, the whole world was watching. We were in France at the time. I watched a video recording.”

 22. 22. Question #20 Did you think it was a good match?

Answer

“ It was a great match with one of the most controversial goals ever.”
