  2. 2. What are Omega 3 Oils? <ul><li>Essential fatty acids which cannot be manufactured by the body </li></ul><ul><li>Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA’s) </li></ul><ul><li>Include Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) </li></ul>
  3. 3. Benefits of Fish Oils In one study, prescription of 4 grams per day of fish oils resulted in a 45% reduction in triglycerides and a 50% reduction in Very Low-Density Lipoproteins (VLDL). Changes in High-Density Lipoproteins were insignificant. Results such as these show why fish oils are recommended to reduce the risk for Heart Disease (McKenney, et al).

These include: </li></ul><ul><li>Decreased Inflammation </li></ul><ul><li>Decreased Menstrual pain </li></ul><ul><li>Reduced bone loss </li></ul><ul><li>Fewer symptoms of depression </li></ul>

Dietary Recommendations <ul><li>For healthy adults with no history of heart disease: The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends eating fish at least 2 times per week. </li></ul><ul><li>For adults with coronary heart disease: The AHA recommends an omega-3 fatty acid supplement (as fish oils), 1 gram daily of EPA and DHA. </li></ul><ul><li>For adults with high cholesterol levels: The AHA recommends an omega-3 fatty acid supplement (as fish oils), 2 - 4 grams daily of EPA and DHA. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Dietary Recommendations (children) <ul><li>There is no established dose for children </li></ul><ul><li>Omega-3 fatty acids are used in some infant formulas </li></ul><ul><li>Fish oil capsules should not be used in children except under the direction of a health care provider. </li></ul>

Precautions <ul><li>Dietary supplements should be taken under the supervision of a professional health care provider </li></ul><ul><li>Fish oil may cause gas, bloating, belching, or diarrhea in some individuals </li></ul><ul><li>High doses of Omega 3 fatty acids may increase the risk of bleeding (umm.edu) </li></ul>

Interactions <ul><li>If you are currently being treated with any of the following medications, you should not use omega-3 fatty acid supplements, without first talking to your health care provider: </li></ul><ul><li>Blood thinning medications </li></ul><ul><li>Diabetes medications </li></ul><ul><li>Cyclosporine </li></ul><ul><li>Topical steroids </li></ul><ul><li>Statin drugs </li></ul><ul><li>Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs </li></ul>
