St john, the Baptist Church

  1. 1.  The 15th century church of St John the Baptista was built by King Emanuel I and stands in Tomar’s main square, Praça da República, and was rebuilt on 16th century. It is distinguished by its amazing Manueline portal and octagonal spire, inside there is a carved stone pulpit and 16th century paintings, which include a Last Supper by Gregório Lopes (1490-1550) and a particularly gruesome beheading of John the Baptist (also attributed to Gregório Lopes). These fantastic features are an optimal excuse to visit our church! “Next stop? … Church of St. John the Baptist!” Ana Rita – Bárbara Reis – Joana Guido – João Pires – Sara Oliveira 11º B – 2011/20121
