  3. 3. Uses of ser *notes• To identify people and things: – ¿Quién es él? Who is he? – Es Javier. He’s Javier. – ¿Qué es? What is it? – Es un mapa It is a map.• To express possession, with preposition de. – ¿De quién es? Whose is it? – Es el diario de Mary. It’s Mary’s diary. – ¿De quién son? Whose are they? – Son los lápices de Joe. They are Joe’s pencils.
  4. 4. Uses of ser *notes• NOTE: When de is followed by the article el, the two combine to form the contraction del. – de + el = del – Es la computadora del profesor. – It is the teacher’s computer.
  5. 5. Uses of ser *notes• To express origin with the preposition de: – ¿De dónde es Javier? Where is Javier from? – Es de Puerto Rico. He is from Puerto Rico.• To express profession or occupation: – Sr. Johnston es profesor. – Yo soy estudiante.• Unlike English, Spanish does not use (un, una) after ser when refering to professions, unless accompanied by an adjective or other description. – Sr. Johnston es un profesor excelente. – Yo soy una estudiante trabajadora.
