Types of BarriersThe barriers are divided chiefly in seventypes, such as:IntrapersonalInterpersonalOrganizational
Intrapersonal BarriersThese barriers are created byhuman himself;in other words created by thesender of the message. They are further divided in fourtypes:Wrong AssumptionsVaried PerceptionsWrong InferenceCategorical Thinking
•Wrong AssumptionHere the speaker or the sender of themessage is having wrong ideas ormisunderstanding about the knowledgeof thelistener.
•Varied PerceptionSome people fail to realize that differentpeoplemay see and understand similarconditions indifferent ways according to theirdifferentbackgrounds and societies and this mayresult ina barrier.
•Wrong InferenceWhen people are having prejudices orpartialities, negative attitude tosomething orsomeone, they are having wronginferencesfor the people around and it may createabarrier. For e.g., if you dislike any of yourrelative, youwill avoid meeting or interacting withthat
•Categorical ThinkingWhen any person is verystubborn or rigid andis having ‘I know everything’attitude, isknown to have categoricalthinking. This kindof persons will avoid healthy andtwo waycommunication. They will prefer to be senders, rather thanreceivers.
Interpersonal BarriersInterpersonal barriers arecreated because ofinappropriate transaction orunderstanding ofthe message among people. They are as following:Limited VocabularyLack of Non-verbalCommunicationSelective CommunicationPoor Listening SkillsVarious Cultures
• Limited VocabularyIf the persons are having lessknowledgeabout grammar and vocabulary, they willnotunderstand the meaning andcommunicationfails. For e.g., if you use the word‘malnourished’ inyour communication, the listener mustknowthe meaning, otherwise meaning will not
• Lack of Non-verbalCommunicationThe speaker should have properNVC tosupport communication. Lack of itmakescommunication ineffective. The use of gestures, expressions, charts, posters etc. should be done toenhance theeffect of communication.
Selective CommunicationDuring the communication, if you listenortake part only in selected areas or youtalkonly with selected people and avoidcommunication with others, it may createaBarrier.
Poor Listening SkillsSometimes people are so deeply involved inthinking or doing any activity that they donotpay attention to the communication goingaround. This is known as poor listeningskills. For e.g., during any business meeting anemployee is thinking about holidays, he/shewill not listen to the discussion going on.
Various CulturesPeople from different cultures, societiesorbackgrounds will have different thinkingand ideologies. Sometimes lack ofknowledge of other cultures will lead tomiscommunication.Cross cultural knowledge should be therefor effective communication.
Organizational BarriersOrganizational barriers will disturbcommunication of any organization orinstitution. Here are the barriers: Fear of Superiors Use of Inappropriate Media Information Overload Too Many Transfer Stations
• Fear of SuperiorsIn some of the organizations theauthorities create autocratic environmentand because of the fear of superiors theemployees cannot speak freely. So, it’s the duty f the authorities tocreatefearless and democratic environmentwhere people can communicate freely.
Use of Inappropriate MediaWhile choosing the medium ofcommunication, one should keep in mindthe requirements, advantages, disadvantages of that particular medium. If the medium is wrongly chosen thecommunication will fail ormiscommunication will occur
Information OverloadIf in any institution the employees aregiven inadequate data or huge amount ofdata, it will create information overload .This will create unnecessary stress in theminds which will result ultimately inineffective communication.
Too Many Transfer StationsThe sender sends any message and itreachesto the receiver via many transfer stations, themessage will get distorted or will bechanged.
