Rhyme & Rhyme Scheme <ul><li>Rhyming words end with the same sound </li></ul><ul><li>The rhyme scheme is the specific order of the rhyme </li></ul><ul><li>Couplets are two lines that rhyme: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>I found a starfish in the bay </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>When I was fishing yesterday . </li></ul></ul>bay & yesterday rhyme!

Writing Couplets <ul><li>Select a topic: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Cats </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Create a list of words about your topic: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Cats, fat, furry, sleeping, meow, hiss </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Brainstorm a list of words that rhyme: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Cat-fat-mat-bat </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Furry-scurry-hurry </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Meow-wow-ow-cow </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Write line one of your couplet </li></ul><ul><ul><li>My fat cat </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Select a rhyming word and complete line two </li></ul><ul><ul><li>My fat cat </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Fell asleep on the mat </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Write three more couplets & </li></ul><ul><li>complete your poem </li></ul>My fat cat Fell asleep on the mat. He is very furry, But too lazy to scurry. I would say wow If he’d ever meow! Oh, my fat cat Can you imagine that?

Writing your own Couplets <ul><li>Select a topic </li></ul><ul><li>Create a list of words about your topic </li></ul><ul><li>Brainstorm a list of words that rhyme </li></ul><ul><li>Write line one of your couplet </li></ul><ul><li>Select a rhyming word and complete line two </li></ul><ul><li>Write three more couplets & complete your poem </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Your finished poem will have four couplets for a total of 8 lines </li></ul></ul>
