What can we do to
reduce our Carbon
Footprint?
Emanating from our individual
potential for savings we will aim for
better results in all areas of every
day school life:
- collecting rubbish on the school
ground and in the surrounding
neighbourhood and a rubbish
service on the schoolyard
- going on foot or by public
transport to school
- Fitness-breakfast
- one week without photocopies
- „tupperware“ - day
- light service/heating service
- drinking water pump
- deposit bottles
- reducing the temperature of
the heating
- competition: the most
ecofriendly class
We reduce the carbon
footprint of our school
In our Comenius Project
2012-2014 we work together
with the following schools:

Tynewater Primary School
Pathhead, Scotland
Instituto Magistrale ‘Mazzini’
Locri, Calabria, Italy
Primary and Secondary
School
‘Konstantin Konstantinov’

What did we do to
reduce our Carbon
Footprint?
During the project we both, students
and teachers, worked intensively on
our ecological sensibility.
Therefore:
- We collected information about
ecological sights in our partner
countries and compared them with
ours.
- We recycled garbage into art in an
art competition.
- We evaluated the carbon Footprint
of our school and some of our
classes.
- We had lessons in which we learned
about ecology.
- We visited ecological institutions
with our classes.
- We had a competition „The eco-
friendliest class“
- We had several „Action Days“ at
school to reduce our Carbon
Footprint.
- We learned from our European
partners.
What are our
achievements?
The evaluation of the dates in 2014 brought the
following results:
Heating
Annual heating consumption 2014:
1238156 kWh = 341731 kg CO2
CO2-savings: 18646,3 kg CO2
Energy
Annual energy consumption 2014:
113012 kWh = 64982 kg CO2
CO2-savings: 3517,75 kg CO2
Water
Annual water consumption 2014:
2956 m³ = 1061,2 kg CO2
CO2-increase: 74,7 kg CO2
Garbage
Annual garbage volume 2014:
176,32 m³ = 35264 kg = 14493,5 kg CO2
CO2-emission: the same as before
With all our activities in this Comenius project we
really were successfull in reducing our Carbon
Footprint.
Both, students and teachers got an ecological
sensibility. We realized, that we have to be more
responsible with nature and its ressources.
Everybody will keep on working on this ecological
awareness!
Our starting situation
For calculating our Carbon Footprint we evaluated
the following dates:
Status: March 2013
Our school campus has an area of 11.555 m²and is
daily used by around 200 students and 24
teachers.
Heating
Annual heating consumption 2013:
1305715 kWh = 360377,3 kg CO2
Saving potential:
199121,5 kWh/year = 54957,5 kg CO2
Energy
Annual energy consumption 2013:
119130 kWh = 68499,75 kg CO2
Saving potential:
13997,8 kWh/year = 8048,7 kg CO2
Water
Annual water consumption 2013:
2748 m³ = 986,5 kg CO2
Saving potential:
27,48 m³/year = 9,9 kg CO2
Garbage
Annual garbage volume:
176,32 m³ = 35264 kg = 14493,5 kg CO2
Saving potential:
3,1 m³/year = 620 kg = 254,8 kg CO2
(estimated volume: 200kg/m³)
In total our school has a saving potential of
63270,9 kg CO2 / year. Every single person of our
school could save about 316 kg CO2 / year during
school time.
To Compare:
The average German citizen produces about
11.000 kg CO2 / year.
