  • Missions is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is. Mission exists because worship doesn’t. Worship is ultimate, not missions, because God is ultimate, not man. When this age is over, and the countless millions of the redeemed fall on their faces before the throne of God, missions will be no more. It is a temporary necessity. But worship abides forever.
  • The story of the Bible is about God being known and worshipped.God’s glory is the paramount theme.God can be loved only when He is known, the bible is the story of God revealing Himself to draw worship from the nations.
  • Yahweh, king of glory, god almightyThe lord is my shephard
  • God’s glory flows in 2 directions.Toward the worldReveals who He is and what He’s donePeople give Him glory in loving worshipPsalm 96:2-3 2 Sing to the LORD, bless His name;         Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day. 3 Declare His glory among the nations,         His wonders among all peoples.          Psalm 96:7-9 7 Give to the LORD, O families of the peoples,         Give to the LORD glory and strength. 8 Give to the LORD the glory due His name;         Bring an offering, and come into His courts. 9 Oh, worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness!         Tremble before Him, all the earth. God’s plan was simple: God would make His name great then Israel could make His name known.
  • Isaiah 43:6-76 I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’       And to the south, ‘Do not keep them back!’       Bring My sons from afar,       And My daughters from the ends of the earth—        7 Everyone who is called by My name,       Whom I have created for My glory;       I have formed him, yes, I have made him.”       Isaiah 43:20-2120 The beast of the field will honor Me,       The jackals and the ostriches,       Because I give waters in the wilderness       And rivers in the desert,       To give drink to My people, My chosen.        21 This people I have formed for Myself;       They shall declare My praise.Psalm 106:7-8          8 Nevertheless He saved them for His name’s sake,         That He might make His mighty power known.Numbers 14:15-2115 Now if You kill these people as one man, then the nations which have heard of Your fame will speak, saying, 16 ‘Because the LORD was not able to bring this people to the land which He swore to give them, therefore He killed them in the wilderness.’ 17 And now, I pray, let the power of my Lord be great, just as You have spoken, saying, 18 ‘The LORD is longsuffering and abundant in mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He by no means clears the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation.’[a]19 Pardon the iniquity of this people, I pray, according to the greatness of Your mercy, just as You have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.” 20 Then the LORD said: “I have pardoned, according to your word; 21 but truly, as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD—Ezekiel 20:1414 But I acted for My name’s sake, that it should not be profaned before the Gentiles, in whose sight I had brought them out.Idolatry – p. 55
  • Isaiah 43:2525 “ I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake;       And I will not remember your sins. Psalm 25:11 11 For Your name’s sake, O LORD,         Pardon my iniquity, for it is great. It’s not what we are saved FROM, but what we are saved FOR that really matters. People are saved to serve God in worship.Malachi 2:22 If you will not hear,       And if you will not take it to heart,       To give glory to My name,”       Says the LORD of hosts,       “ I will send a curse upon you,       And I will curse your blessings.       Yes, I have cursed them already,       Because you do not take it to heart.       Romans 3:2323 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,Acts 12:2323 Then immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and died. John 12:27-32   27 “Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.” 29 Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.” 30 Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake. 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.”2 Thessalonians 1:10 10 when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe,[a] because our testimony among you was believed.
  • A lot of people may have a problem with the fact that this sounds like PRIDE.Pride is not attractive to us. It's a human quality and not of God. 2) God cannot escape His own glory (who else is worth it?) 3) If putting something above God is idolatry, then God would be idolater if He put US above himself.4) There is nothing is us that we can glorify. Why does God want worship?Worship fulfills God’s love. He loves people so vastly that He wills them to something better than greatness; he wants to bring them into an honored nearness to Him.
  • Read p. 52
  • Doxological = Having to do with Glory
  • Guilt based appeals only go so farWeary or harden heartsInspire token obedience“Costly and difficult work needs to be done. Such labor cannot be sustained by the fleeting momentary zeal generated by appeals for desperate, perishing souls. God’s global purpose is an ancient affair, far more than an urgent need. Now more than ever we need to be motivated by a far-reaching jealosy for God’s glory.”
  • He yearns for the unique outpouring of love, righteousness, wisdom, and worship that can come from every people.
