Co-parenting Can
Support Children’s Well-
Being after Divorce
Miriam Galindo
Introduction
 A licensed psychologist who has also served as a social worker, Miriam
Galindo runs a private practice in Irvine, California. Her focus is on
working with families dealing with divorce and child custody issues.
Miriam Galindo continues to assist the Orange County Superior Court
as a child custody evaluator.
Some divorced parents today have opted to become involved in co-
parenting arrangements. A number of psychologists have had positive
words for co-parenting, which gives couples the opportunity to
maintain a stable, supportive environment for children even when they
themselves cannot continue in their relationship.
While co-parenting definitely presents challenges, requiring close
communication, schedule planning, and acceptance of mutual
responsibility on the part of the adults, it brings many benefits for the
children involved.
Co-parenting
 Co-parenting can contribute to children’s emotional resilience and well-
being by keeping their lives on an even keel amid the stresses of
changing situations. When children see their parents working together
to maintain consistency despite personal differences, they learn
important lessons about displaying maturity even in less-than-ideal
circumstances.
In order to be successful at co-parenting, experts advise adults to stay
emotionally available to their children by planning for quality time
together. They additionally point out that children need to be reassured
and to talk about the divorce openly and honestly in order to process
their emotions. Parents will also need to be careful to continue to
present a united front and to support one another’s decisions.
