Compound words are an English Standard for 2nd graders in the state of Michigan. Students must portray a knowledge of the concept of compound words after have been showed examples and must portray that knowledge with practice doing worksheets, giving examples and completing assignments.
A compound word is a combination of two words that equals a whole word. There are many forms of compound words such as hyphenated such as mother-in-law or step-brother.
Explain to the students that compound words are two completely separate words that make a whole new word. Pictures help to show that they are very different words that create another very different word.
