Research methodology 2nd evaluative moment-assignments

  1. 1. { RESEARCH METHODOLOGY IN LANGUAGE TEACHING 2nd Evaluative Moment Assignments Sandra Milena Rodríguez National Tutor
  2. 2. The second evaluative moment includes two different parts and corresponds to the (30%) out of the (100%) in the evaluative process. The assignments will be submitted on October 27th: • PART 1: Correcting and adjusting the RESEARCH PROBLEM STATEMENT. • PART 2: Constructing a frame to connect the research problem statement, the research questions and the research objectives. Defining the concepts that support the research problem statement. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY IN LANGUAGE TEACHING Extending components of the research problem statement
  3. 3. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY IN LANGUAGE TEACHING Extending components of the research problem statement PART 1: For correcting and adjusting the RESEARCH PROBLEM STATEMENT follow the instructions and steps below. • Revise and read in detail both the feedback provided in the 1st evaluative moment and the rubric uploaded in the same link. The rubric contains observations to improve, complete and adjust the research problem statement. • The research problem statement contains evidences that support the phenomenon, the factors, conditions and difficulties related to language learning/language teaching you want to investigate about. • Remember that evidences to support the research problem statement come from the language classroom, theoretical or literature revision and previous research projects.
  4. 4. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY IN LANGUAGE TEACHING Extending components of the research problem statement PART 1: For correcting and adjusting the RESEARCH PROBLEM STATEMENT follow the instructions and steps below. • Evidences from the language classroom should be described explicitly. How?- You should describe the difficulties students face and the problems you identify in the language classroom. Revisit the language classroom, take notes of the situations you observe, talk to the students and the teachers to register evidences. • As part of the attachments you should submit the official authorization or permission to develop the research project in the coming semesters: Action Research (8th semester), Research Project 1 (9th semester) and Research Project 2 (10th semester). • If you do not get such permission, you should select a group of participants in a different context.
  5. 5. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY IN LANGUAGE TEACHING Extending components of the research problem statement PART 1: For correcting and adjusting the RESEARCH PROBLEM STATEMENT follow the instructions and steps below. • Each student should submit a maximum (3-page-description) supporting: a) The adjustment of the research problem identification (done in the 1st moment) in a group of (EFL/ESL) students in a specific school, institution and/or university. b) The evidences of the research problem statement (done in the 1st moment) with a clear research target focused on a specific language aspect or component (for example, speaking, listening, communication skills, materials, storytelling). Define the focus based on the problem you want to investigate about. As a student: What do I have to submit in the 1st part of the assignment?
  6. 6. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY IN LANGUAGE TEACHING Extending components of the research problem statement PART 1: For correcting and adjusting the RESEARCH PROBLEM STATEMENT follow the instructions and steps below. c) The adjustment of evidences from literature or the theoretical revision, (done in the 1st moment). Such evidences from theory require the connection between the problem identification and the concept(s) involved in such problem. EXAMPLE: If you want to investigate how students increase speaking skills through the implementation of stories in the language classroom, you should define the specific speaking skills you want to develop through your pedagogical plan. It is not possible to involve all the speaking skills, you should describe the concept of stories in the language classroom and describe the relation between stories, their implementation and the development of speaking skills. As a student: What do I have to submit in the 1st part of the assignment?
  7. 7. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY IN LANGUAGE TEACHING Extending components of the research problem statement PART 1: For correcting and adjusting the RESEARCH PROBLEM STATEMENT follow the instructions and steps below. d) The adjustment of evidences from previous research projects. You should revisit the LANGUAGE RESEARCH JOURNALS presented in the 1st moment. EXAMPLE: A student who plans to investigate about classroom interaction should search for previous research projects about interaction, language interaction, communication, or speaking. Revisit the most remarkable language research journals in Colombia and outside the country. (Example, PROFILE from Universidad Nacional de Colombia, COLOMBIA APPLIED LINGUISTICS JOURNAL from Universidad Distrital. • Further details about these language research journals were provided in the 1st evaluative moment. As a student: What do I have to submit in the 1st part of the assignment?
  8. 8. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY IN LANGUAGE TEACHING Extending components of the research problem statement PART 1: For correcting and adjusting the RESEARCH PROBLEM STATEMENT follow the instructions and steps below. e) At the end of the research problem statement (Remember maximum a-three-page writing) write the main research question that should contain (from two to three sub- questions). The sub-questions unfold the aspects involved in the main research question. The sub-questions are connected with the research plan and the research objectives. f) Include the complete references that support the research problem statement. Remember that references should correspond between the content and the bibliography. It is mandatory to follow APA style available at https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/. **If a paper does not provide a clear organization of citations and bibliography it cannot be accepted as a research paper. As a student: What do I have to submit in the 1st part of the assignment?
  9. 9. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY IN LANGUAGE TEACHING Extending components of the research problem statement • PART 2: PART 2: Constructing a frame to connect the research problem statement, the research questions and the research objectives. Complete the matrix below and revise the connection or the relation between the research components below: The synthesis of the Research Problem and your role as a researcher (From 260-280 words)- Arial 11. The main Research Question connected with the sub- questions The main objective connected with the specific objectives The concepts and authors involved in the research problem statement, (minimum 3 authors) Include the REFERENCES (minimum 5 references) at the end of the matrix.
