  1. 1. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY IN LANGUAGE TEACHING UNDERSTANDING ANDCONSTRUCTING A RESEARCH DESIGNM. A. in Ed. Sandra Milena Rodríguez
  2. 2. 2ND PARTUNDERSTANDING AND CONSTRUCTING A RESEARCH DESIGNAs Dörnyei (2007) states, common questions and hesitations among non-expert researchers are related to the number of participants which are expected to be involved in the research project. Therefore, it is precise to reflect on…

  4. 4. UNDERSTANDING AND CONSTRUCTING A RESEARCH DESIGN Dörnyei (2007) states that…The Sample is the group of participants whom the researcher actually analyzes in a research proposal and thepopulation is the group of people whom the study is about, (Dörnyei, 2007, 2007 p.96). The sample is a subset or a narrower group of the population that isrepresentative of the whole population for doing the research project
  5. 5. UNDERSTANDING AND CONSTRUCTING A RESEARCH DESIGN The concept of representativenessDörnyei (2007) is crucial to obtain solid and states that… meaningful results in a research project, which mainly depends on how accurately the target population is or to what extend this sample represents the larger population, Milroy and Gordon (2003). populationAdditionally, when selecting the “target population”a researcher must consider what random sampling is:
  6. 6. UNDERSTANDING AND CONSTRUCTING A RESEARCH DESIGN What’s random sampling?

  9. 9. 2ND PARTUNDERSTANDING AND CONSTRUCTING A RESEARCH DESIGN RESEARCH METHODOLOGY APPROACHES Based on Dörnyei (2007), the Method describes the technical details of how the investigation is conducted. From my perspective as a researcher, it is the path to develop the procedure or the steps to answer the research question and to develop the specific objectives which constitute the general objective.
  10. 10. 2ND PARTUNDERSTANDING AND CONSTRUCTING A RESEARCH DESIGN RESEARCH METHODOLOGY APPROACHES The method implies the procedure to construct the research design, which in terms of Dörnyei (2007) isthe construction crucial to convince others about the credibility of the results and the investigation itself. The Method which sustains the research designinvolves, participants, instruments/materials for datacollection, procedure, data analysis, variables and/or categories to analyze results. The key theoretical concepts or constructs whichfrom the literature of teaching and learning Englishmust be clear and defined when doing the research design.
  11. 11. UNDERSTANDING AND CONSTRUCTING A RESEARCH DESIGN RESEARCH METHODOLOGY APPROACHES APPROACHES TO QUALITITATIVE RESEARCH (Fraenkel and Wallen, 2008)-Dawson (2002) Feminist research Feminist researchers focus on lives and experiences of women.
  12. 12. UNDERSTANDING AND CONSTRUCTING A RESEARCH DESIGN RESEARCH METHODOLOGY APPROACHES APPROACHES TO QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH -Experimental Research: It is the only type of research that directlyattempts to influence a particular variable, and when properly applied, it is the best type for testing hypotheses about cause-and-effect relationships.-Quasi-Experimental studies have to be analyzed with similar characteristics aforementioned.-Correlational Research: It aims to investigate the relationship between two variables.-Descriptive Research: It aims to account for qualitative and quantitative research of classroom research.
