in 2012, a dying (now deceased) cosmetic surgeon gave a speach to a Dentistry class in Singapore. in it, he revealed the life of the rich and famous, and also his regrets for not achieving less materialistic goals. reminds me of Randy Pausch's video
2. Great “effort” speaking
On 19 January 2012, Nine months to his death,
presented to a class his life experiences.
He made this final effort because at the time he was
sick with lung cancer.
What was the motive of this speech? Who were his
target audience? What’s the point of this?
3. School life(according to the doc)
He came from a below-average family, like all great
rags to riches story, and was extremely competitive.
He blames this competitive “mindset” to the media at
the time.
This mindset led him to top schools, success in his
UG and sports.
4. Humble or Arrogant?
From this I can tell he is trying to be Humble by
putting his success on something intangible, The
media of his time.
This is supported by the second paragraph of his
speech with the words “I was told” and “happiness is
about success”
Since he puts his success in his competiveness,
which he blames the media.
5. GPs
In his speech, he mentioned how “ironic” it is that
general practitioners (GPs) are not made out by the
public as heroes. And how he , A rich “beautician” is.
He then later adds on how he has neglected his
duties as a doctor by chasing after a money making
aspect of doctoraid.
This also shows how the doc is trying to portray
himself as humble.
6. Shallow waters
In Paragraph 6-8, the Doc shows how shallow and
meaningless all his achievements have been to
himself.
He does this when he told the audience how
exquisitely he lived like buying a “spider convertible”
and bought a “bungalow” around the rich and famous.
The he found out he had lung cancer and reflected
the meaning of all this extremities and came to a
realisation that it was all meaningless
7. depression
From then on, he went into a depression spiral.
Though his friends hated him
Jealous
Hated his achievements
8. Becoming a Doc
He realised that he has forgotten why he became a
Doctor in the first place, to help others.
He chose a path where money was a abundant,
plastic surgery.
He says that all GPs actually saves lives and is not as
popularly acclaimed as a plastic surgeon like himself,
whose aim is not to save lives, but to earn and
squander riches.
9. Conclusion
The purpose of his speech is actually a way of
convincing himself of doing good with his life so
that he can have peace in the “next’ this is so as
he now shows humblest, compared to his
previous arrogance to his friends. He realised
how shallow his life has been, and all the
mistakes he has committed to friends and most
importantly himself. He is trying to be seen in a
good light before he passes. To assure himself to
enter the gates of heaven.
