  5. 5. Known for writing about ordinary people.</li></li></ul><li>Life and legacy<br />Both of O. Henry’s parents died early, so he was raised by his aunt and his grandmother.<br />He was an avid reader, but left school at 15 to pursue work, including work on a ranch, in a drug store, and at a bank.<br />He eventually became a reporter, but was convicted of embezzling money in 1897. In 1898, he entered jail in Columbus, Ohio.<br />He began writing short stories to earn money to support his daughter, Margaret.<br />After he left jail, he moved to New York, New York… however, his final years were marked by alcoholism, divorce, and unhappiness.<br />
