Miguel Casqueira, Life of Pi Project

 1. 1. Novel: Life of Pi
CulminatingTask
2. 2. Question!
Trace the changes in Pi’s identity from a young child to the adult he now is. Use events and quotes from the novel to demonstrate his transformation. What is Yann Martel saying about identity through this story?
3. 3. Pi in childhood.
Pi as a child was taunted.
“he raised his arm, pointed at me and shouted, “it’s Pissing Patel!”’
He tried very hard to avoid these things by keeping quiet but his brother would always be there to pick on him. “I kept silent. Because whatever mocking was to come, it was to come.”
4. 4. Pi in Childhood.
Pi was very interested in animal life. “a religious freak who cut a snake’s head off”
His family having a zoo shaped Pi to grow up believing in either science or religion. He believes that religion has created all the world. This can be support because Pi knows two men one believes science created the earth and other religion. The Kumars.
5. 5. Pi in Childhood.
He is very religious and spiritual. We know this because he wants to practice two more religions on top of being a Hindu, Catholic and Arabic. “Jesus, Mary, Muhammad and Vishnu!”
6. 6. Transition
Once Pi and his family leave India, so does Pi’s old life. When the ship sinks and he is stuck on this boat Pi is beginning to transform into a new person. Good or bad he has changed in many ways.
7. 7. Pi in Adulthood
Pi has to start doing things against his religion to survive like kill fish.
Pi also has to break other beliefs. For example; he’s grown up in a zoo his entire life so animals are dangerous and cannot be trusted!
“the most dangerous animal in the zoo!” But
in the boat he must learn to live with Richard
Parker. He does this by taming him.
8. 8. Pi in Adutlhood
Pi lastly changes his belief on God. After experiencing his entire family being killed and all he had taken away. He thought how can their be a God? Why would he do this to him? Pi questions this throughout the boat ride, but he still practices the religions. Pi would pray.
