QUESTION 4: How did you use mediatechnologies in the construction andresearch, planning and evaluation stages?I used various software and hardwarethroughout the creation of my three mediaproducts, which helped me to create mediaproducts to a professional standard.
Blogger• At the beginning of thepre-production stage, an accounton Blogger.com was created torecord all of our research, planning and production work.• Blogger was particularly helpful because all of our work could be recorded neatly inthe same place where it could be viewed by sections to show the progress of ourproject throughout the months.• It is an online blogging site so we were able to update our blog from anywhere, evenon-the-go which came in handy especially when we were on location filming ourmusic video and needed to quickly update.• Blogger itself allowed me to be very creative because it gave me many options whenwriting a blog post, such as the ability to embed YouTube videos, insert images andadd links to external websites. This helped my blog to appear much more organisedbecause my finished media products could be embedded straight into a blog post.
Research & Planning Stage• I used Survey Monkey initially to create freeonline questionnaires to send out to determinethe target audience of my media products andbetter understand the Indie Rock genre bygathering feedback. The survey could be postedto social networking sites such as Facebook andTwitter and was used as our primary research. We asked questions which helped to shape ourmedia products by using the conventions of theIndie Rock genre that we found out, such aswhat fans prefer to see in Indie Rock musicvideos.• Google and Google Maps were used toresearch into appropriate locations for filmingour music video, and the use of Google StreetView allowed us to plan where exactly we weregoing to film without actually having to be there, saving time and money. Google search itselfwas used to research into the band that wechoose, especially to look up record labelinformation and find other existing Indie Rockmedia products.
Construction Stage• Adobe Photoshop played a large part duringthis stage. The album poster was createdusing this, as it is professional standardsoftware that enabled me to edit every detailto be exactly how I wanted it using the layersfunction, which allowed effects to be addedsuch as ‘Overlay’ or the opacity to bechanged so that certain layers were not asvisible – we used this to place the tie-dyebackground over another image on thealbum poster. The images for our mediaproducts were edited using Photoshop tocreate the ‘vintage’ effect that fit well into thegenre.• An Apple Macbook Pro was used because itwas professional standard, as well as aCanon EOS 600D camera to shoot video inHD quality, ensuring good quality playbackwhich is essential. Not only could wecapture video, but the DSLR also allowed usto take photos of our band for the ancillarytexts, making it multi-functional while stillbeing easy to use.
• Final Cut Pro wasused to edit the musicvideo together. This isprofessional standardsoftware in which TheLord of the Rings wasedited.• This software allowedus to insert the desiredclips onto the timelinewith ‘Weekend’ playingover the top.• The small screenenabled us play ourvideo back as we wentalong, allowing roomto change the way aclip was edited if therewas any mistakes.ConstructionStageFinal Cut ProDifferent quality setting were available as the output format for thevideo (e.g. HD) which meant that we could process the video in thesame format in which we filmed it. Rendering the video was verytedious but the end result was excellent.
• YouTube played a large role throughout my project. I used it initially to researchother existing music videos in the Indie Rock genre, such as Yuck’s Get Awaywhich helped to establish the conventions of the genre so that we could recreatethem in our own music video, making sure it would be recognisable to theaudience. This is because YouTube is worldwide and videos from Americanbands (and other countries) can be accessed easily.• After this, I used YouTube to host our qualitative data –which came in the form of a video interview. This waseffective to host the video on YouTube because wecould gather feedback and then it could also then beeasily embedded into Blogger and the views andother statistics could be monitored.• Finally, after the ‘Weekend’ music video had been completed, we uploaded thefinished video to YouTube so that we could gather accurate feedback throughcomments and ‘Likes’ or ‘Dislikes’, as well as aiming to promote the band to awider audience. I felt that when the video was uploaded the quality of the originalvideo was lost somewhat but this is due to YouTube scaling down the quality ofvideos rather than a fault of our own. However it still looked professional.Research, Planning,ConstructionYouTube
Evaluation Stage• During the evaluation stage of my project, I tried to incorporatedifferent media platforms in which to display work to keep itinteresting and fresh. I used PowerPoint to make presentations that Icould then upload via Slideshare which allows them to be playedand embedded into Blogger. This is very effective because it meansthat I could get straight to the point using bullet points in PowerPointrather than writing large paragraphs of text.• Inserting images and moving them around was much easier onMicrosoft PowerPoint than it was on Blogger and so it gave me morefreedom and was much quicker.
