Thank you
Wu received artistic education in the Hangzhou National Arts Academy under guidance of such famous painters like Pan Tianshou (1897–1971) and innovative and impressionistic artist and educator Lin Fengmian (1900–1991) in the early 20th century. In 1947, Wu went to Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts of France. He also became the only one who decided to go back to an uncertain China to become “a plum blossom in the winter of one’s hometown instead of a rose in an already prosperous garden of others”.

    2. 2. In the summer of 1950, soon after MaoZedong had proclaimed the foundingof the peoples republic, WuGuanzhong, happily studyingpainting in Paris, made the fatefuldecision to return to China, the onlyone who decided to go back to anuncertain China to become “a plumblossom in the winter of one’shometown instead of a rose in analready prosperous garden of others”.Appointed to teach in the CentralAcademy of Art in Beijing, his headfull of Cézanne and Van Gogh, hesoon found that he was forbiddento mention those names, and feltunable to face his radical studentsuntil he could talk about socialistrealism in the Soviet Union, and itsforeshadowing in the art of IlyaRepin. This was the beginning ofalmost three decades of harassmentand victimization that, for him andcountless others, ended only after thedeath of Mao in 1976.Wu was trained as an oil painter, chieflyof the human figure. When his nudes werecondemned in the early 1950s, hedestroyed them all and did not paintanother until 1990, after a longed-forreturn visit to Paris.Exhibitions in San Francisco in 1989, inLondon in 1992 and in Paris in 1993catapulted Wu Guanzhong onto theinternational art scene. As Wu Guanzhong, once said, “There isno boundary interms of art; artbelongs to the world, not to a certainnation or country.”
    3. 3. “To nationalize oil painting and to modernizeChinese painting: in my view these are twosides of the same face."
    4. 4. “The fundamental elements of formal beauty comprise form, color, and rhythm. I usedeastern rhythms in the absorption of western form and color, like a snake swallowing anelephant. Sometimes I felt I couldn’t gulp it all down and I switched to using [Chinese] ink.”Wu Guanzhong
    5. 5. “Abstract beauty is the heart of the beauty offigurative art. It is a natural thing to whichwe all respond. As a child loves to play with akaleidoscope, so everyone likes pure form andcolor.” Wu Guanzhong
