Spring in Barcelona2 Parque Guell1

  1. 1. The park is one of the largest green spaces in Barcelona, with more than 17 hectares, next to the Sierra de Collserola. Gaudi planned and directed the construction of the park from 1900 to 1914 for Eusebi Güell for a residential park intended for sixty single- family residences. The project, however, was unsuccessful and the park became city property in 1923. Though never fully completed, it still remains one of Gaudi’s most colorful and playful works. Park Güell, intended to serve Güell’s private city, became all of Barcelona’s, then the world’s favourite
  2. 2. The outer walls of the park as covered in these enormous medallions with the words "Park" and "Guell" emblazened upon them in the same mosaic style as within
  3. 3. The Casa del Guarda (Caretaker's House), located at the Carrer d’Olot entrance, is the private space conceived and designed by Gaudí as a house for the Park Güell gatekeeper. Built between 1901 and 1903 it represents the two principles of simplicity and utility. Nowadays, the Casa del Guarda is used as a museum, offering background information on the Park Güell
  4. 4. A shop and bookshop specialising in Gaudí, modernism and Barcelona is located in one of the entrance pavilions of Park Güell, one of Antoni Gaudí’s most iconic works. The shop’s range is based on products connected with Gaudi's work and Barcelona, such as postcards and posters, T-shirts and textile accessories, jewellery and decoration
  5. 5. The administration lodge, while small has two floors (one of which now contains the gift shop) and a rooftop terrace. The roof is topped with a large gable crowed with a four-armed cross which has become synonymous with Gaudi's work
  6. 6. A double flight of steps divided into three sections are going upwards from the main entrance to the Hypostyle Room or Columns Room, beneath which is a tank that feeds the springs on the axis of the flight of steps
  7. 7. The first fountain
  8. 8. The second fountain: the head of a snake, burst from a mosaic crest. The outer blue circle represents the world and within in a small central creast you can see the Catalan flag
  9. 9. Gaudí's multicolored mosaic salamander, popularly known as "el drac" (the dragon). The dragon is covered in trencadis. Trencadís, also known as pique assiette, broken tile mosaics, bits and pieces, memoryware, and shardware, is a type of mosaic made from cemented-together tile shards and broken chinaware. Trencadís is a Catalan term that means 'chopped’
  10. 10. Upon the last landing, you can sit on the Odeon bench. This bench is designed to provide shade in the summer, sun in the winter and protects visitors from the wind
  11. 11. Above rests a terrace lined with an organic, tile-covered bench ergonomically designed. Below sits a reservoir for the park’s fountains
