  1. 1. Mosta is a town located in central Malta, occupying an area of 6.8km2 and around 19,200 inhabitants, making it one of the largest towns on the island. Mosta is very famous for its Dome, the church of Santa Marija Assunta, also known as Rotunda church that has a huge dome. The surroundings of Mosta are fertile agricultural land and the villages of Naxxar, Rabat, Burmarrad and Lija

  3. 3. Saint John the Baptist and child The Mosta Dome was built in 1860 over another church that was built in 1614. The Rotunda was designed by Giorgio Grognet de Vassé, a French citizen resident in Mosta. Mosta residents, at that time totaling not more than 1500, built the church. It took them 27 years to complete and resulted in a major attraction

  5. 5. Dome internal diameter 37.2 metres and walls nearly 9.1 metres thick
  6. 6. On 9 April 1942, the church was nearly destroyed during World War II. An Axis bomb hit the dome of the church but failed to explode. All the 300 people attending morning mass were left unharmed. The detonator was removed and a replica bomb is now displayed as a memorial

  8. 8. Mosta Dome or the Rotunda, is the third largest unsupported dome in the whole World with an internal diameter of 37.2 metres and walls nearly 9.1 metres (30 ft.) thick

  13. 13. A very popular feast among the locals as well as the tourists is the feast of Saint Mary the Assumption, celebrated on the 15th August. This day is a public holiday and is celebrated with lots of music, food and fireworks
  14. 14. The town has several legends such as the Mosta Bride (L- Għarusa tal-Mosta), and a number of historic places such as the Victoria Lines and medieval chapels
