Kuala Lumpur is the national capital and largest city, the cultural, financial, and economic centre of Malaysia. Merdeka Square (or Dataran Merdeka) is located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is situated in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. It was here the Union Flag was lowered and the Malayan flag hoisted for the first time at midnight (time: 12:00 AM) on August 31, 1957. Since then, Merdeka Square has been the usual venue for the annual Merdeka Parade (National Day Parade).

  1. 1. Kuala Lumpur is also home to the Parliament of Malaysia, and the official residence of the Malaysian King, the Istana Negara. Merdeka Square (or Dataran Merdeka) is situated in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. It was here the Union Flag was lowered and the Malayan flag hoisted for the first time at midnight (time: 12:00 AM) on August 31, 1957. Since then, Merdeka Square has been the usual venue for the annual Merdeka Parade (National Day Parade). Literaly Independence Square, it was formerly known as the Selangor Club Padang or simply the "Padang" and was originally the cricket green of the Selangor Club (now Royal Selangor Club) With a population of over 30 million, Malaysia is the world's 44th most populous country.   3. 3. Jamek Mosque, officially Sultan Abdul Samad Jamek Mosque, is one of the oldest mosques in Kuala Lumpur. Built in 1909 was designed by Arthur Benison Hubback

Perhaps the grandest of all the architectural wonders in Merdeka Square is the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. With its towering 41- meter high clock tower, arched colonnades and copper domes, this building used to house the Federal Malay States administration back in 1897 and then the High Court and Kuala Lumpur's Supreme Court in 1972

Designed in the Mogul (or Indo-Saracenic) style, originally conceived by renowned colonial architect AC Norman, multiple designers contributed to the building's final flamboyant form, which was completed in 1897. Formerly the secretariat for the colonial administration, it now houses the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture. It looks particularly impressive when illuminated after dark

  11. 11. Restoran Wartisan, built in 1919, was the former Chartered Bank and then the National History Museum. When its collections were moved to the National Museum in 2007, this heritage site was leased and oddly turned into a restaurant that serves Malaysian cuisine

  13. 13. Royal Selangor Club is a social club in Kuala Lumpur, founded in 1884 by the British who ruled Malaya

  15. 15. Built in 1904, the Queen Victoria Fountain (its old name) was shipped in separate pieces from England and assembled in Kuala Lumpur to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897. It has a sister fountain (same name), which is located in Malacca

  18. 18. The Dayabumi Complex is a major landmark in Kuala Lumpur. It houses several commercial facilities and is one of the earliest skyscrapers in the city (construction began on 14 February 1982)

  22. 22. Panggung Bandaraya DBKL (Malay for DBKL City Theatre) is a historical theatre hall located across the Merdeka Square, at the junction of Jalan Tun Perak and Jalan Raja. Construction began in 1896 and was completely finished in 1904. The theatre formerly occupies the historic Old City Hall of Kuala Lumpur. The theatre and old City Hall building were designed by a colonial government architect, Arthur Benison Hubback, who was also responsible for designing the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, the Jamek Mosque and other colonial structures throughout the Klang Valley
