Kuala Lumpur is the national capital and largest city, the cultural, financial, and economic centre of Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur is also home to the Parliament of Malaysia, and the official residence of the Malaysian King (Yang di-Pertuan Agong), the Istana Negara. The National Mosque of Malaysia is also located at Kuala Lumpur.

  1. 1. Kuala Lumpur is also home to the Parliament of Malaysia, and the official residence of the Malaysian King, the Istana Negara. King's Palace is the official residence of His Majesty, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King) of Malaysia. It stands on a 28 acre (110,000 m²) site, located at a commanding position on the slope of a hill of Bukit Petaling overlooking the Klang River, along Jalan Syed Putra. The King’s Palace or Istana Negara was built in 1928 and was originally the residence of a Chinese millionaire. Surrounded by a beautiful park, green lawns and ponds the King´s Palace, Istana Negara, is the official residence of the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, a Malay title usually translated as "Supreme Head”. With a population of over 30 million, Malaysia is the world's 44th most populous country.   3. 3. Outside the main gate the Royal Guards, dressed in white Malay as well as red British inspired uniforms, are guarding the main gate on horse and on foot
  4. 4. The Kingdom of Malaysia consists of 9 sultanates (Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Selangor, Sembilan and Terengganu) and 4 non monarchic states (Malacca, Penang, Sabah and Sarawak)
  5. 5. The “Yang Di-Pertuan Agong” or Paramount Ruler is elected among the sultans every five years, which means that there are 45 years until a sultan can be elected for the second time
  6. 6. The king in Malaysia is the head of the state. Together with the Prime Minister, the King appoints the cabinet from among the members of Parliament, as well as the nominal head of the military and all three branches of government
  7. 7. Kuala Lumpur National Mosque Malaysia (Masjid Negara) Built in 1965
  8. 8. Built in 1965 by Architect: Howard Ashley, Hisham Albakri and Baharuddin Kassim, the National Mosque or Masjid Negara is one of the most unique mosques in the world Islamic Arts Museum

  10. 10. National Mosque or Masjid Negara does not follow the conventional Middle Eastern mosque design of domes and arches
  11. 11. The mosque has a large capacity of 15,000 people
  12. 12. The best features of the mosque are the 73 meters high minarets and its 16 pointed star concrete which is its main roof. The main roof's design was inspired from the idea of an open umbrella while the minarets were like a folded umbrella.

  15. 15. The seven-point, umbrella-shaped annexe, Makam Pahlawan (Heroes’ Mausoleum), towards the back of the mosque, contains the crypt of some political celebrities Railway station
  16. 16. Kuala Lumpur Railway Station is an almost fairytale Moorish-style building to the southeast of the National Mosque. Located along Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin (previously known as Victory Avenue), it used to be KL’s main railway hub until 2001 when Kuala Lumpur Sentral took over much of its role
  17. 17. Adopting a mixture of Eastern and Western styles, it was designed by A.B. Hubbock in 1910. Beneath the Islamic exterior, the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station resembles a typical glass and iron Victorian-era English railway building
  18. 18. Opposite stands the Malaya Railway Administration Building, also designed by Hubbock in 1917

  20. 20. Now its primary function is that of the administrative head office of the Keretapi Tanah Melayu. Built using convict labour, there is a hotel (the Heritage Station Hotel) on the first floor and inside is a restaurant plus several souvenir stalls

  22. 22. At the heart of Kuala Lumpur is an area which never sleeps, and far more colourful and bustling than its bigger and more glamourous neighbours, KLCC & Bukit Bintang. Chinatown, based in Petaling Street, is also known as 'Chee Cheong Kai' (Starch Factory Street), a reference to its roots as a tapioca- producing district
  23. 23. Deeply immersed in Oriental culture, heritage and history, Chinatown is undoubtedly one of the most popular tourist spots in Malaysia. Chinatown is also a well- known bargain hunter’s paradise, a place where you can find all sorts of stuff from Chinese herbs to imitation goods.
  24. 24. At night, its main market area, Petaling Street, transforms into a lively and vibrant night market, filled with hundreds of stalls offering all kinds of goods at dirt-cheap prices, and the best thing is, the prices can be brought lower still as haggling is the way of life here
