Pizza Friday 186

Jumping on the Fanwagen, tailgating billboards and sunbathing with QR codes. Strange days indeed. Have a slice of pizza and think about it.

  3. 3. Wall Street JournalAmazon, Now a Book LenderlineKindle Owners Who Subscribe to Prime Service Will Be Able to Borrow E-TitlesAs the e-reader and tablet wars heat up, Inc. is launching a digital-book lendinglibrary that will be available only to owners of its Kindle and Kindle Fire devices who are alsosubscribers to its Amazon Prime program. The program will be limited, at least at the beginning, in what is available to borrow. Amazonwill initially offer slightly more than 5,000 titles in the library, including more than 100 currentand former national bestsellers, such as Stephen R. Coveys "The 7 Habits of Highly EffectivePeople."None of the six largest publishers in the U.S. is participating. Several senior publishingexecutives said recently they were concerned that a digital-lending program of the sortcontemplated by Amazon would harm future sales of their older titles or damage ties to otherbook retailers. Moreover, Amazon will restrict borrowers to one title at a time, one per month. Borrowers cankeep a book for as long as they like, but when they borrow a new title, the previously borrowedbook automatically disappears from their device numantra.comLink: 214.635.2300

  7. 7. Seventy Percent Of Parents HelpUnderage Kids Get On Facebook
WashingtonPostSeven in 10 parents of underage Facebook users admitted to helping their kids sign up.Technically its against Facebook policy for people under 13 to up but a Harris Interactivepoll of 1,000 parents with children aged 10-14 found they are doing it anyway, with momand dads help, or at least tacit cooperation. The study, funded in part by Microsoft and universities, found over half of all parents with12-year-olds said they knew their children were signed up for the service. One in fiveparents of 10-year-olds knew of their children’s activity on the site.Asked how the kids signed up for the service — thus violating the site’s terms of service— nearly seven in 10 parents said they helped their children set up accounts. numantra.comLink: 214.635.2300

  10. 10. BNET: "American Football"? U.S. SoccerOvertakes NBA, NHL in AttendanceU.S. Major League Soccer has eclipsed both the NBA and the National Hockey League in terms of averageattendance at games - a feat that explains why Fox and Telemundo just paid an incredible $1 billion for therights to broadcast the Word Cup in 2018 and 2022. That price was more than twice what ESPN andUnivision paid to broadcast the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.It also explains why NBC has signed on to broadcast football during primetime next season.Of course, mere attendance at stadia isnt the full measure of a sports popularity. The indoor arenas ofbasketball and hockey have structurally smaller audience capacities than the capacious outdoor arenas offootball. And percentage attendance at NBA and NHL games tends to be nearer capacity than attendance atsoccer. (And then, of course, theres the unsolved mystery of why "sold out" games at certain clubs seem tofeature so many empty seats...)Nonetheless, it appears that soccer is well on the road to becoming Americas third favorite sport, afterAmerican football and baseball. That will have a major impact on sports sponsorship and advertising budgets- providing more media for advertisers to buy and increasing competition between the different sports forsponsor opportunities, such as Adidass $200 million pact with MLS. numantra.comLink: 214.635.2300
