Location
The pleurae and lungs lie on either side of the
mediastinum within the chest cavity
 Each pleura has two parts:
Parietal layer
Visceral layer

Pleural Fluid
 The pleural space normally contains 5 to 10 ml of clear fluid
 It lubricates the opposing surfaces of the visceral and parietal
pleurae during respiration
 The formation of the fluid results from hydrostatic and
osmotic pressures between the capillaries
 The pleural fluid is normally absorbed into the capillaries of
the visceral pleura

ANATOMY OF THE PLEURA
• BLOOD SUPPLY
• Visceral pleura--- Artery supplied by bronchial and
pulmonary arterial systems. The veins drain is
pulmonary vein.
• The parietal pleura--- Artery supply is from various
systemic arterial supply the chest wall, diaphragm,
and mediastinum.Vein is to the superior vena cava.

ANATOMY OF THE PLEURA
• NERVE SUPPLY
• Parietal pleura is innervated by both somatic and
sympathetic and parasympathetic fiber via the
intercostal nerve.
• The diaphragmatic pleura is supplied by phrenic
nerve.
• The visceral pleura is devoid of somatic nerve.
