SSNHS’ School Publication titles its School Paper once
more as ‘The Innovation’. Innovation is defined as new
ideas, process, methods and great changes as
Sandayong Sur National High School once again flipped
the next page of the book, innovations started to
grow. The bulb on the bottom symbolizes the innova-
tive ideas and the people symbolize the interconnection
of one another through technology. Indeed, the
school has become more competitive than the passed
years. Thanks to the 21st century skilled learners and
the teaching staff.
EDITORS NOTE:
Hello. Good day, my dear “The
Innovation” readers! How are you? The
innovation improves as years pass by. This
proves that SSNHS’ students are innovative
and have the ability to explore new ideas
which obviously crowns the name “The
Innovation”. Special thanks to my
co–editorial staff who helped me to make this
publication possible. With the aid of our
collaborative efforts and minds despite the
pressures, stress and hectic schedules we
encountered. We worked hand in hand just to
publish this. You can gain and learn more
knowledge because we created sections such as
poems, genius tests, facts and more. Not just
that! You cannot solely gain knowledge but it
entertains your minds, too. Enjoy reading and
flip it until the last page. God bless and
spread the good vibes everyone!

NASAKTANG PUSO
Ni: Mona Chris Kinanahan
Sa hindi inaasahan
Nagtagpo ating landas
Akala ko’y ikaw na
Yun pala’y akala ko lang
Masakit man sa damdamin
Pero dapat kong tiisin
Ang kirot at sakit
Kailangan ay maialis
O, irog kong inilayo
Tadhana’y hindi talaga sat-
in
Pag-ibig ko sa iyo’y
Matagal ko ng siniil
Sana’y saking aking pagla-
lakbay
Puso ko’y unti-unting
maghilom
At sa paglimot ko sayo
Ay may kaakibat na
pagbabago.
Bitter ba kamo?
Ni: Nieva Marie Tariao
Sabi ng iba, ”walang forever”
Tanong ko lang, ba’t sila bitter?
Dahil ba walang kasintahan?
Forever ang pinag aawayan?
Ewan ko ba’t nauso na,
Pagiging bitter ng mga tao
sumusobra,
Ba’t di sila gumawa ng sariling istorya?
Mas maganda yun, hindi ba?
Hindi sa pabor ko nito,
Nagbibigay lang ako ng opinion ko,
OK lang maging single,
Makibagay sa iba at maki-mingle.
Sabi ng iilan, “pag may bf/gf,
inspirado ka”.
Bakit, di ba pwede pamilya muna?
Kaya bumababa ang grades eh,
Inuuna ang pakikipag text kay
baby.
Pasensya sa mga natamaan,
Ito’y pagbibigay ng kaunting kaalaman,
Upang hindi masira ang
kinabukasan,
Bata pa tayo at wala pang alam.

Mahal na Mahal Kita
Ni: Quenie Marie Camaongay
May sikreto akong nais ipaalam sayo
Minahika mo ba’t kaylaki mong tukso?
Araw-araw kang hanap ng aking mga mata
Humihinto lang kung ika’y nakita na
Ang kasiyahan ay nararamdaman ko sa tuwina
Lalalala… mahal na mahal kita
Kaya pakiusap huwag mo akong iiwanan
man.
Salamat aking Kaibigan
Ni: Jo Marie Formentera
Sa bawat araw na kasama ka,
Walang mapagsidlan ng tuwa’t
saya.
Sa bawat dalamhati at mga hapis,
Nariyan ka at karamay kang lagi.
Sa mga pagsubok na sa akin ay
ibinibigay,
Ikaw ang siyang laging dumaramay.
Salamat sa iyo aking kaibigan,
Na sa akin laging nakaagapay.

I’m Fab
By: Khem Tabontabon
Here am I.
Not about to lie,
Not being rude,
Not having feud,
But I am just telling the truth.
Hey, I’m fab.
A statement I did not rob.
Will you believe with the fact?
Because on skills I do not lack..
I am free,
Not on strolling but in being
myself, you see.
Believing on YOLO,
Not having distance or SOLO.
1 29
Having fun
Like tying buns
Chewing gums
On Friday like dumb
Yeah, I cuss
To show I’m fussed
I may bash
Sshh, please stay hushed
Will you believe I’m fab?
Say yes, I do not nag
Still don’t believe the
fact?
Oh, shut up gal, I’m fab

MISUNDERSTANDING
By: Dexter Rom
I consider you a friend indeed
Trust, is just what I need
I got used that you are on my side
And cheering you up, I always tried
It seems our friendship has been tested
And that is what really happened
Then, a conflict began to rise
Misunderstanding to be precise
Those moments we've been through
I wished to share more with you
Those experiences we had together
I wont forget, I'll always remember
Just how playful fate is
It made us forget our promise
We haven't talked to each other then
It's like we are strangers once again
It's just a little misunderstanding
But it caused too much suffering
Just let me tell you one thing
Those times with you, it means everything
Wish
By: Caryl Lorren Capungan
What will I wish?
if a genie appeared to make all my wishes come true?
Should I ask for gold bars, diamonds and money?
Should I ask him to give me lots of bags and dresses?
So I could brag about them to the other girls and boys?
Or should I ask him more extended hours
So I could go shopping?
But what will I do with lots of dresses and money?
If I can’t share them with anybody?
Even if I go shopping all day
Shopping alone doesn’t seem alright
So I guess I’ll ask or wish for
Those who will be with me
Through thick and thin
And I’ll wish that will always be in good health
Because good health is one’s greatest wealth.

MY LOVE
By: Niña Jean Capin
You inspire me every day
And let me feel your love
day by day
“Way Forever” they might
say
But there’s a lifetime
anyway
Distance may hinder
But it helps us to be
stronger
Even a thousand miles wont
matter
As long as we trust one
another
Thank you for the tender
care
And for loving me always
dear
Our good memories I’ll
cherish forever
You’re the precious gift ever

Pagdiriwang ng Buwan
Great Pretender
By: Maris Stella Sotomayor
From the sad memories that I gather
Yours would linger forever
Cause I treat you as a sister
And thought you’re not a pretender
When I turn back
You're the first one who mock
When I needed help an I knocked
You always make reason to turn back
And when our friends gather,
You utter words much better
So that we would think that you’re not a sinner
Oh! You really are a great pretender
But still I forgive you
Cause somehow you gave my life a hue
And still my best friend is you
Believe me cause I’m not a pretender like you

SSNHS’ Opinion about the Is-
sue of Death Penalty
Disagree ko kay wala sila'y
katungod nga kuhaon ang
kinabuhi sa usa ka tawo . Ang
Ginoo ray naa'y katungod.
- Yvonne Grace Papaya
I agree because people learn
what’s right and what’s wrong.
-Lyka Margarette Olivar
Disagree ko kay wala sila'y
katungod patyon ang usa ka
tawo.
-Marielle Matugas
Disagree ko kay bisag unsa pa
atong buhaton nila, tao gihapon
sila ug tanang tao naa'y sala kay
walay tao nga perfect.
-Therese Ann Olivar
For me, agree ko ani kay it is one
way to discipline others. Para ma
motivate sad sila. Nya para sad
safe atong environment bisan asa
ta.
-Nina Jean Capin
Disagree ko ani kay not all the
time ang nakasa maoy
mapasinganlan, sometimes in-
osente maoy ma-blame.
-Nieva Marie Tariao
I DISAGREE about death penalty
because aside from the fact nga
daghan ang maangol, posibling
kaning makahatag og trauma. GOD
gave us life to enjoy but how can
we enjoy it if others will kill us like
we are pigs? Opinion lang po.

COOL FACTS!
“Bullying… No Way!”
7 22
Bullying is a vey inhumane action that needs
to be ended. There are a quite few reasons for
bullying to occur in or out of school. According to
Emma Elise Roberts in her article about types of
bullying, “It is often the children who bully one
another. They want to have fun in any way they
like.”
Children who bully others feel insecure and try
to fit in with a group. They are jealous of other
kids and feel unhappy, so what they do is to bully
other kids to get that feeling that they are su-
perior. They are copying what they have seen
from what others did before or what has been
done to them. Before it goes to any further, the
teachers or parents need to watch out for these
signs and try to help the child in any way they can.
People have experienced a lot of these inci-
dents occurring in front of their eyes. They have
been the witnesses of students who were being
bullied. The problem is, these bystanders are
afraid to get involved on the situation; howev-
er, they must know the right thing to do. They
must take an immediate action to stop its fur-
ther threats.
Treat others the way you wanted to be treat-
ed. A great idea that all of us must follow in
order to attain a joyous and peaceful life; fur-
thermore, to prevent the so called bullying, we
should be vigilant enough to see its signs so
that we can prevent further incidents that
might happen. I must say bullying… no way!

Danao City Division Office encouraged aspirant Grade 10 beauty
queen students from different schools to join the search for Mutya Sa Danao
2016 in accordance to the fiesta of Sr. Sto. Tomas de Villanueva. Twenty-one
official candidates participated and one was chosen as a representative of
Sandayong Sur National High School. I, as one of the candidates, features
you to the night of these unforgettable memories.
Joining Mutya Sa Danao was not easy. I can't deny the fact that I have
personally encountered difficulties. One of the difficulties I encountered was
being scolded by our trainor due to of my mistakes but still I didn't give up
and turned those into opportunities. By that, I gained many experiences
that boost up my skills and characteristics in beauty pageant. I became so-
cially active and I learned a lot of virtues.
September 17, 2016, the day that we all awaited and the night when
each of us competed to win the crown for Mutya Sa Danao 2016. Everyone
was nervous but we did our best just to show every Danawanons that
we have hidden talents to show. The shout and cheers of the crowd gave us
strength and confidence.
At the end of the battle, I as Ms. Sandayong Sur National High School
brought home the title as Mutya Sa Danao 4th runner-up. Though I didn’t
won the crown, the unforgettable memories still taught me to be better next
time. Being Mutya Sa Danao 2016b 4th runner– up is a great pleasure and
that unforgettable experience of mine will endure for a lifetime.

Muchas Gracias for the Blessing!
In behalf of my fellow students and the teachers of
Sandayong Sur National High School, we would like to ex-
press our gratitude to the Department of Education
(DepEd) under the ECP Program for giving us new comput-
ers for our computer laboratory.
These computers will help us on our studies. We
don’t have to go to the internet cafes anymore and spend
a large amount of money. In addition, we can also avoid
accidents that might happen when we travel to internet
cafes just to search on our home works and make our pro-
jects. It is a great privilege to have these computers that
you had given to us. We will not promise but we will do
our best to take care of these. Again, thank you very much
and may God bless you!

Amerikano at Hapon.
kasakiman noong unang panahon.
Mabuhay kayo at nawa’y marami
pa ang magiging katulad ninyo.

Girl Scouts, IGNITE!
-Nieva Marie Tariao
GSP Division Camping was held last September 21-23, 2016 at D.T
Durano Memorial Integrated School.
Being a Girl Scout is what we’re really proud of. We had faced tough
challenges but we never thought that having those would make us a re-
sponsible one, but camping isn’t about those challenging days we were
there. The main purpose of this is to teach us values not only with our-
selves but also to others. It is where our patience, skills and capabilities
were tested.
When the camping officially started, the overwhelming excitement
began. I never thought I can do such things like sleeping at midnight and
waking up early at 3:00 am. I guess this is how camping really goes. Way
back there, I also experienced the thrill of being caught and punished
by our Troop Leader. We had also undergone lots of seminars which some
were for socializing with others. I guess that was one a challenge too. A
challenge that has to be deal with. Even though the games were tiresome,
still, we enjoyed the time we were playing.
All those sleepless nights, tiring games and survival times were to-
tally paid with happiness. It may be tiring but it never fail us to smile. At
the end of the day, we found ourselves productive. It may be tough some-
times but we will never forget those experience, enjoyment and learn-
ings we had. That GSP Camping was the best!

A Road To Lead Excellently
-Yobhel Leo Sotomayor
It was 10th of October when we, the participants for the RAFI: Kool Adventure
Camp: Leadership Training were waiting for the bus . The hot morning greeted every-
one’s faces with an exciting aura. Everyone of us brought large luggages for we know that
we are going to spend five hectic days on this training. At exactly 8:00 AM, the bus ar-
rived. During the very long ride, everyone seemed so quiet and serious. Four hours to
be exact when we arrived to our destination–RAFI:KAC, Balamban.
Everyone was caught astonished upon seeing the very beautiful place-the clean
surroundings, well-landscaped areas, and the very lovely flowers. Then, we were brought
by one of the instructors to the Community Hall where we were divided into four
groups-the “Tribu Tsinelas”, “Tribu Sidlak”, “Tribu Hakhak” and “Tribu Wayuk”. I be-
longed to “Tribu Tsinelas” while my Vice-President, Bryle Joseph Alerta and our SSG Ad-
viser, Mrs. Renaida Cal belonged to “Tribu Sidlak. I felt really odd being separated from
them. However, I was glad because my teammates were very friendly that made me feel
comfortable.
The next four days were full of activities that strengthen the bond of our friend-
ship . It made us realize that in conquering dragons teamwork is very crucial and a must
in order to succeed. We were very grateful to our facilitator for they had guided us cor-
rectly and nicely.
We were also thankful to the Lord that none of us got hurt and we were able to
go home safely.
RAFI: KAC is a leadership training that enhances leadership skills. Its goal is to
mold individuals to become better leader. It is the exact training ground for all the people
especially to those wishes to be a leader. It has the complete facilities and materials.
The ropes courses and activities were indeed very challenging and enjoyable.
We were very lucky to experience RAFI:KAC. We will never forget those days. Tru-
ly it is an awesome training. We had learned many lessons and skills of being a great
leader. We had learned that leadership demands self-denial, service , communi-
cation and a sense of direction and mission.
A Drop of Life
Things what we observe in our naked eyes do not prove how safety our sur-
roundings are. Sometimes, we wouldn’t notice that the water we are drinking can
already bring harm to our body.
February 9, 2017, Mitsukushi Trading Company donated a water purifier in
our school knowing that water in the school is no longer safe for the students
and teachers.
They donated the said item to purify the contaminated water for the safety
of both students and teachers who have consumed it.
The donation of the item started by having a formal program at the School’s
computer laboratory where the proper turnover from the donor, Mr. Harby C. Vil-
lanueva to the School head, Mr. Mark H. Sierras and to the School Property Custo-
dian Mr. Joseph Alerta took place.
As one of the recipients of the said item, I am very thankful for making our
water safe as it benefits to us.

Shifting is Coming
-Ms. Merra Mae Ramos
The Philippine Educational System is very dynamic. Way back during the
ancient times when our Filipino ancestors had both formal and informal system of
education in which the main purpose of educating the young ones was primarily for their
needs.
Now, in this modern era, our educational system have continuously coped the con-
stant changes of the educational system of the world, adapting what system is trending or
adapting the international curriculum because of globalization and for the pur-
pose of producing globally competitive graduates. Last 2012, the Filipinos’ reactions
were divided whether to adapt the K+12 program or not; however, whether all the Filipinos
were in favor or not in the implementation of the said program, still it became a law in our
country. Now, another issue in our educational system is being heard. It is the clamor about
shifting our school calendar into international school calendar. The issue has started since
2014 when University of the Philippines (UP) led the change of shifting its school calendar
into August to July. This was followed by another big universities such as
Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU), De La Salle University (DLSU) and University
of Santo Tomas (UST). The issue has never been ended, since many citizens or educational
authorities are not in favor of the shifting, well in fact, the shifting of the calendar is not new
in our system because during the Commonwealth Period, the school calendar from June to
March was changed into July to April as what is stated from Commonwealth Act No. 586 or
Education Act of 1940; however, it was shifted back to its original school calendar. Mean-
while, the Republic Act No. 7797 which sets the school calendar to a maximum of 220 class
days, states the school year should start on the first Monday of June but not later than the
last day of August and the universities' decision is also backed by Republic Act No. 7722 which
provides freedom for the higher education institutions to establish their own academic calen-
dars and to set their opening days in order to encourage innovation and to exercise academic
freedom among institutions of higher learning. Thus, allowing those universities to shift their
school calendar; however, there are a lot of questions whether all the basic education insti-
tutions and all the higher education institutions will follow the steps of those universities, but
before that let us make our own decision by thinking a lot of times the pros and cons of the
issue.

RAFI-SEEDS DIVISION EVALUATION
AND VALIDATION
Rafi-SEEDS Division Evaluation And Validation
for the Top 5 Elementary and Secondary Schools recently
brought Sandayong Sur National High School at the top among
all the secondary schools of our Division. On the 24th
day of January 2017, Division of Danao City issued the memo-
randum to the top ranked schools who participated in the contest.
Secondary Level
Sandayong Sur NHS – 1st
Place
Sabang NHS – 2nd
Place
Baliang NHS – 3rd
Place
RMDSF-STEC – 4th
Place
Nicolas U. Tiongco NHS – 5th
Place
For the second round of the said evaluation,
SSNHS ranked second as Sabang National High
School grabbed the first place.
This proved that our school with the efforts of the
teaching and non-teaching staff, students and stakeholders
can surpass the other big schools within our Division. This
served as a good and successful start of our new school head,
Mr. Mark H. Sierras.

The shifting of our calendar means aligning with the international academic calendars just like how we
align our educational system to the rest of the world when we implement the K to 12 Basic Education
Curriculum. It helps the students to have easy access and transition from one country to another who
have similar school calendar. The deserving students or even teachers may have the possibility to par-
ticipate for the exchanged programs, training programs and research programs of the participating
countries. Thus, it is promoting collaboration, synchronization and internalization of the educational
institutions of the partaking countries. Another, advantages are facilitating work-life harmony of the
academic community with longer term breaks, improving administrative work, maintaining school facili-
ties to its optimal level, reducing operational expenses, and providing better flexibility in case of class
cancellations. On the other hand, the cons can be the classrooms may not be a conducive place for
learning since the school days fall during the hottest months of the year in which many classrooms are
not well-ventilated. Another is, the students’ class attendance may also be affected because of the
town fiestas and other holidays just like Holy Week when the students have good times to be with their
family and friends just to relax and to find quality time to bond with each other. Because of these, only
Central Luzon, Western Visayas, and Western Mindanao are the regions that are in favor of shifting the
calendar. It means that 95% supports for a June to March academic which is based from the DepEd
survey.
Now, the question is, “If you were the Secretary of Education, would you shift the School Cal-
endar from June to March to August to May? For me the answer is NO. Knowing that our country is the
only member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) that starts its academic year in
June, I would not shift our School Calendar to August to May because June is the most feasible month to
kick off the beginning of the school year when everyone are ready for another academic endeavors
after a long month of celebrating fiestas, spending time to have quality bonding with family and friends
and chilling for months of enduring the hottest times of the year. There is no such problem with our
school calendar, whether we can synchronize, harmonize or internationalize or not with the other
educational institutions abroad. What matters most are, we can still be interconnected with other
countries in other matters. We can still develop and produce globally competitive graduates who may
appeal to the international researchers or educational authorities. As long as the educational institu-
tions will also develop and intensify international-leveled educational programs and no
matter how we pattern our educational system and school calendar with the rest of the world and no
matter how our system are being influenced by foreign countries, these will never be an issue. The
most important thing to remember is producing graduates who can achieve the international standards.
Educational system exists because its main concern is to cater the needs of the students, so whatever
the changes that may happen in our system, we must put the learners first since they are our primary
concerns. The decision of shifting calendar must give advantages to the majority not to the fewer num-
ber of learners.

Goodbye ...Hello! For a Better Tomorrow
by Maris Stella Sotomayor
Nothing is permanent in this world except change. Indeed, change itself is
the only thing that never changes, isn’t it? Change keeps happening in our
day- to- day-struggle just to achieve progress in life.
Sandayong Sur National High School once again had embraced another
change as Mr. Jaymar Lavador, the school head, departed for his new
assignment. Teachers and students felt sad for his departure and at the same
time felt excited to see the new school head, Mr. Mark Sierras.
It was a sunny day of October 10 , 2016 , the day of installation for the
new school head Mr. Sierras and the day of departure for Mr. Lavador . Mixed
emotions could be seen in the faces of the guests. The most awaited part of the
program was the speech of Mr. Lavador . Everyone were very quiet and seemed
very eager to listen to what Mr. Lavador had to say. Sadness could also be seen
in everyone’s faces while listening to his speech . The last part was the speech of
Mr. Sierras , again, everyone seemed curious not only to listen to his speech but
also to see him. Mr. Sierras showed his eagerness to continue what Mr. Lavador
had started and to do more for the improvement of the school.
The program ended smoothly with guest and spectators were very
optimistic for the school’s changes. Further, changes are made in order to
achieve more progress and improvement – changes for the better. The new
school head of SSNHS , Mr. Mark H. Sierras can do more progress and
improvement of the school but he can’t do it by himself. He needs the
continuous support and cooperation from the teachers, parents, students, and
other stakeholders. They need unity for them to achieve their vision , which is to
give a better tomorrow for the students who are the hope of our nation.

The Innovation - School Paper S.Y. 2016-2017

  • 1.
  • 2. About the Cover SSNHS’ School Publication titles its School Paper once more as ‘The Innovation’. Innovation is defined as new ideas, process, methods and great changes as Sandayong Sur National High School once again flipped the next page of the book, innovations started to grow. The bulb on the bottom symbolizes the innova- tive ideas and the people symbolize the interconnection of one another through technology. Indeed, the school has become more competitive than the passed years. Thanks to the 21st century skilled learners and the teaching staff. EDITORS NOTE: Hello. Good day, my dear “The Innovation” readers! How are you? The innovation improves as years pass by. This proves that SSNHS’ students are innovative and have the ability to explore new ideas which obviously crowns the name “The Innovation”. Special thanks to my co–editorial staff who helped me to make this publication possible. With the aid of our collaborative efforts and minds despite the pressures, stress and hectic schedules we encountered. We worked hand in hand just to publish this. You can gain and learn more knowledge because we created sections such as poems, genius tests, facts and more. Not just that! You cannot solely gain knowledge but it entertains your minds, too. Enjoy reading and flip it until the last page. God bless and spread the good vibes everyone!

  • 5. NEws MISUNDERSTANDING By: Dexter Rom I consider you a friend indeed Trust, is just what I need I got used that you are on my side And cheering you up, I always tried It seems our friendship has been tested And that is what really happened Then, a conflict began to rise Misunderstanding to be precise Those moments we've been through I wished to share more with you Those experiences we had together I wont forget, I'll always remember Just how playful fate is It made us forget our promise We haven't talked to each other then It's like we are strangers once again It's just a little misunderstanding But it caused too much suffering Just let me tell you one thing Those times with you, it means everything Wish By: Caryl Lorren Capungan What will I wish? if a genie appeared to make all my wishes come true? Should I ask for gold bars, diamonds and money? Should I ask him to give me lots of bags and dresses? So I could brag about them to the other girls and boys? Or should I ask him more extended hours So I could go shopping? But what will I do with lots of dresses and money? If I can’t share them with anybody? Even if I go shopping all day Shopping alone doesn’t seem alright So I guess I’ll ask or wish for Those who will be with me Through thick and thin And I’ll wish that will always be in good health Because good health is one’s greatest wealth. 28

You really are a great pretender But still I forgive you Cause somehow you gave my life a hue And still my best friend is you Believe me cause I’m not a pretender like you - Reyna Mae Claros

Ang Ginoo ray naa'y katungod. - Yvonne Grace Papaya I agree because people learn what’s right and what’s wrong. -Therese Ann Olivar For me, agree ko ani kay it is one way to discipline others. Para ma motivate sad sila. Nya para sad safe atong environment bisan asa ta. -Nina Jean Capin Disagree ko ani kay not all the time ang nakasa maoy mapasinganlan, sometimes in- osente maoy ma-blame. -Nieva Marie Tariao I DISAGREE about death penalty because aside from the fact nga daghan ang maangol, posibling kaning makahatag og trauma. GOD gave us life to enjoy but how can we enjoy it if others will kill us like we are pigs? Opinion lang po. -Mona Chris Kinanahan -Ma. Gellin Galon

  • 12. “Bullying… No Way!” 7 22 Bullying is a vey inhumane action that needs to be ended. There are a quite few reasons for bullying to occur in or out of school. According to Emma Elise Roberts in her article about types of bullying, “It is often the children who bully one another. They want to have fun in any way they like.” Children who bully others feel insecure and try to fit in with a group. They are jealous of other kids and feel unhappy, so what they do is to bully other kids to get that feeling that they are su- perior. They are copying what they have seen from what others did before or what has been done to them. Before it goes to any further, the teachers or parents need to watch out for these signs and try to help the child in any way they can. People have experienced a lot of these inci- dents occurring in front of their eyes. They have been the witnesses of students who were being bullied. The problem is, these bystanders are afraid to get involved on the situation; howev- er, they must know the right thing to do. They must take an immediate action to stop its fur- ther threats. Treat others the way you wanted to be treat- ed. A great idea that all of us must follow in order to attain a joyous and peaceful life; fur- thermore, to prevent the so called bullying, we should be vigilant enough to see its signs so that we can prevent further incidents that might happen. I must say bullying… no way! - Yobhel Leo Sotomayor A single drop of water con- tains one hundred bil- lion atoms Did you know that the Amazon Rainforest pro- duce half of the world’s oxygen supply? • 15. 19 Muchas Gracias for the Blessing! In behalf of my fellow students and the teachers of Sandayong Sur National High School, we would like to ex- press our gratitude to the Department of Education (DepEd) under the ECP Program for giving us new comput- ers for our computer laboratory. These computers will help us on our studies. We don’t have to go to the internet cafes anymore and spend a large amount of money. In addition, we can also avoid accidents that might happen when we travel to internet cafes just to search on our home works and make our pro- jects. It is a great privilege to have these computers that you had given to us. We will not promise but we will do our best to take care of these. Again, thank you very much and may God bless you! -Shanea Leigh Olivar 9 BRAIN TEASER! 1. A boy and his father are caught in a traffic accident, and the father dies. Mabuhay kayo at nawa’y marami pa ang magiging katulad ninyo. - Chinby Manulat 10
  • 17. 11 Girl Scouts, IGNITE! -Nieva Marie Tariao GSP Division Camping was held last September 21-23, 2016 at D.T Durano Memorial Integrated School. Being a Girl Scout is what we’re really proud of. We had faced tough challenges but we never thought that having those would make us a re- sponsible one, but camping isn’t about those challenging days we were there. The main purpose of this is to teach us values not only with our- selves but also to others. It is where our patience, skills and capabilities were tested. When the camping officially started, the overwhelming excitement began. I never thought I can do such things like sleeping at midnight and waking up early at 3:00 am. I guess this is how camping really goes. Way back there, I also experienced the thrill of being caught and punished by our Troop Leader. We had also undergone lots of seminars which some were for socializing with others. I guess that was one a challenge too. A challenge that has to be deal with. Even though the games were tiresome, still, we enjoyed the time we were playing. All those sleepless nights, tiring games and survival times were to- tally paid with happiness. It may be tiring but it never fail us to smile. At the end of the day, we found ourselves productive. It may be tough some- times but we will never forget those experience, enjoyment and learn- ings we had. That GSP Camping was the best! • 18. 12 A Road To Lead Excellently -Yobhel Leo Sotomayor It was 10th of October when we, the participants for the RAFI: Kool Adventure Camp: Leadership Training were waiting for the bus . The hot morning greeted every- one’s faces with an exciting aura. Everyone of us brought large luggages for we know that we are going to spend five hectic days on this training. At exactly 8:00 AM, the bus ar- rived. During the very long ride, everyone seemed so quiet and serious. Four hours to be exact when we arrived to our destination–RAFI:KAC, Balamban. Everyone was caught astonished upon seeing the very beautiful place-the clean surroundings, well-landscaped areas, and the very lovely flowers. Then, we were brought by one of the instructors to the Community Hall where we were divided into four groups-the “Tribu Tsinelas”, “Tribu Sidlak”, “Tribu Hakhak” and “Tribu Wayuk”. I be- longed to “Tribu Tsinelas” while my Vice-President, Bryle Joseph Alerta and our SSG Ad- viser, Mrs. Renaida Cal belonged to “Tribu Sidlak. I felt really odd being separated from them. However, I was glad because my teammates were very friendly that made me feel comfortable. The next four days were full of activities that strengthen the bond of our friend- ship . It made us realize that in conquering dragons teamwork is very crucial and a must in order to succeed. We were very grateful to our facilitator for they had guided us cor- rectly and nicely. We were also thankful to the Lord that none of us got hurt and we were able to go home safely. RAFI: KAC is a leadership training that enhances leadership skills. Its goal is to mold individuals to become better leader. It is the exact training ground for all the people especially to those wishes to be a leader. It has the complete facilities and materials. The ropes courses and activities were indeed very challenging and enjoyable. We were very lucky to experience RAFI:KAC. We will never forget those days. Tru- ly it is an awesome training. We had learned many lessons and skills of being a great leader. We had learned that leadership demands self-denial, service , communi- cation and a sense of direction and mission. A Drop of Life Things what we observe in our naked eyes do not prove how safety our sur- roundings are. Sometimes, we wouldn’t notice that the water we are drinking can already bring harm to our body. February 9, 2017, Mitsukushi Trading Company donated a water purifier in our school knowing that water in the school is no longer safe for the students and teachers. They donated the said item to purify the contaminated water for the safety of both students and teachers who have consumed it. The donation of the item started by having a formal program at the School’s computer laboratory where the proper turnover from the donor, Mr. Harby C. Vil- lanueva to the School head, Mr. Mark H. Sierras and to the School Property Custo- dian Mr. Joseph Alerta took place. As one of the recipients of the said item, I am very thankful for making our water safe as it benefits to us. -Abbeguel Morata 17
  • 19. 13 Shifting is Coming -Ms. Merra Mae Ramos The Philippine Educational System is very dynamic. Way back during the ancient times when our Filipino ancestors had both formal and informal system of education in which the main purpose of educating the young ones was primarily for their needs. Now, in this modern era, our educational system have continuously coped the con- stant changes of the educational system of the world, adapting what system is trending or adapting the international curriculum because of globalization and for the pur- pose of producing globally competitive graduates. Last 2012, the Filipinos’ reactions were divided whether to adapt the K+12 program or not; however, whether all the Filipinos were in favor or not in the implementation of the said program, still it became a law in our country. Now, another issue in our educational system is being heard. It is the clamor about shifting our school calendar into international school calendar. The issue has started since 2014 when University of the Philippines (UP) led the change of shifting its school calendar into August to July. This was followed by another big universities such as Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU), De La Salle University (DLSU) and University of Santo Tomas (UST). The issue has never been ended, since many citizens or educational authorities are not in favor of the shifting, well in fact, the shifting of the calendar is not new in our system because during the Commonwealth Period, the school calendar from June to March was changed into July to April as what is stated from Commonwealth Act No. 586 or Education Act of 1940; however, it was shifted back to its original school calendar. Mean- while, the Republic Act No. 7797 which sets the school calendar to a maximum of 220 class days, states the school year should start on the first Monday of June but not later than the last day of August and the universities' decision is also backed by Republic Act No. 7722 which provides freedom for the higher education institutions to establish their own academic calen- dars and to set their opening days in order to encourage innovation and to exercise academic freedom among institutions of higher learning. Thus, allowing those universities to shift their school calendar; however, there are a lot of questions whether all the basic education insti- tutions and all the higher education institutions will follow the steps of those universities, but before that let us make our own decision by thinking a lot of times the pros and cons of the issue. 16 RAFI-SEEDS DIVISION EVALUATION AND VALIDATION Rafi-SEEDS Division Evaluation And Validation for the Top 5 Elementary and Secondary Schools recently brought Sandayong Sur National High School at the top among all the secondary schools of our Division. On the 24th day of January 2017, Division of Danao City issued the memo- randum to the top ranked schools who participated in the contest. Secondary Level Sandayong Sur NHS – 1st Place Sabang NHS – 2nd Place Baliang NHS – 3rd Place RMDSF-STEC – 4th Place Nicolas U. Tiongco NHS – 5th Place For the second round of the said evaluation, SSNHS ranked second as Sabang National High School grabbed the first place. This proved that our school with the efforts of the teaching and non-teaching staff, students and stakeholders can surpass the other big schools within our Division. This served as a good and successful start of our new school head, Mr. Mark H. Sierras. -Cathlyn Ann Perez
  • 20. 15 The shifting of our calendar means aligning with the international academic calendars just like how we align our educational system to the rest of the world when we implement the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum. It helps the students to have easy access and transition from one country to another who have similar school calendar. The deserving students or even teachers may have the possibility to par- ticipate for the exchanged programs, training programs and research programs of the participating countries. Thus, it is promoting collaboration, synchronization and internalization of the educational institutions of the partaking countries. Another, advantages are facilitating work-life harmony of the academic community with longer term breaks, improving administrative work, maintaining school facili- ties to its optimal level, reducing operational expenses, and providing better flexibility in case of class cancellations. On the other hand, the cons can be the classrooms may not be a conducive place for learning since the school days fall during the hottest months of the year in which many classrooms are not well-ventilated. Another is, the students’ class attendance may also be affected because of the town fiestas and other holidays just like Holy Week when the students have good times to be with their family and friends just to relax and to find quality time to bond with each other. Because of these, only Central Luzon, Western Visayas, and Western Mindanao are the regions that are in favor of shifting the calendar. It means that 95% supports for a June to March academic which is based from the DepEd survey. Now, the question is, “If you were the Secretary of Education, would you shift the School Cal- endar from June to March to August to May? For me the answer is NO. Knowing that our country is the only member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) that starts its academic year in June, I would not shift our School Calendar to August to May because June is the most feasible month to kick off the beginning of the school year when everyone are ready for another academic endeavors after a long month of celebrating fiestas, spending time to have quality bonding with family and friends and chilling for months of enduring the hottest times of the year. There is no such problem with our school calendar, whether we can synchronize, harmonize or internationalize or not with the other educational institutions abroad. What matters most are, we can still be interconnected with other countries in other matters. We can still develop and produce globally competitive graduates who may appeal to the international researchers or educational authorities. As long as the educational institu- tions will also develop and intensify international-leveled educational programs and no matter how we pattern our educational system and school calendar with the rest of the world and no matter how our system are being influenced by foreign countries, these will never be an issue. The most important thing to remember is producing graduates who can achieve the international standards. Educational system exists because its main concern is to cater the needs of the students, so whatever the changes that may happen in our system, we must put the learners first since they are our primary concerns. The decision of shifting calendar must give advantages to the majority not to the fewer num- ber of learners. 14 Goodbye ...Hello! For a Better Tomorrow by Maris Stella Sotomayor Nothing is permanent in this world except change. Indeed, change itself is the only thing that never changes, isn’t it? Change keeps happening in our day- to- day-struggle just to achieve progress in life. Sandayong Sur National High School once again had embraced another change as Mr. Jaymar Lavador, the school head, departed for his new assignment. Teachers and students felt sad for his departure and at the same time felt excited to see the new school head, Mr. Mark Sierras. It was a sunny day of October 10 , 2016 , the day of installation for the new school head Mr. Sierras and the day of departure for Mr. Lavador . Mixed emotions could be seen in the faces of the guests. The most awaited part of the program was the speech of Mr. Lavador . Everyone were very quiet and seemed very eager to listen to what Mr. Lavador had to say. Sadness could also be seen in everyone’s faces while listening to his speech . The last part was the speech of Mr. Sierras , again, everyone seemed curious not only to listen to his speech but also to see him. Mr. Sierras showed his eagerness to continue what Mr. Lavador had started and to do more for the improvement of the school. The program ended smoothly with guest and spectators were very optimistic for the school’s changes. Further, changes are made in order to achieve more progress and improvement – changes for the better. The new school head of SSNHS , Mr. Mark H. Sierras can do more progress and improvement of the school but he can’t do it by himself. He needs the continuous support and cooperation from the teachers, parents, students, and other stakeholders. They need unity for them to achieve their vision , which is to give a better tomorrow for the students who are the hope of our nation.
